The Bad stuff
Short single player
Constant flow of enemies
Friendly AI is frustrating
The latest Indiana Jones adventure movie was horrible. The whole twist didn’t work for me so I found myself witnessing George Lucas destroy yet another epic trilogy. I don’t know why I keep watching his new movies - I should just give up.

I don’t review movies though – I review games. On the other hand, where there’s a big movie there’s usually a video game - fortunately in this case it’s LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures.

You’ll start the game off by taking control of the LEGO version of Indiana Jones while exploring the Amazon jungle featured in Raiders of the Lost Ark – a tutorial level set in a very familiar scene from the movies.

Over the course of the game you’ll experience a comedic take on memorable scenes featured in the first three Indiana films which do a great job at disguising the scary scenes and are certain to bring laughter to both older and younger audiences.

The game not only puts you in control of Indy but also his many sidekicks who from the films, such as Short Round, Marion, Willie, Elsa and many more. If you’ve played any of the LEGO Star Wars titles you’ll be very familiar with Indy’s tight controls and easy to learn gameplay while newcomers to the series will have the controls worked out in mere minutes.

Every character has one combat move (standard punch and kick) and one special combat move – Indy has his whip attack, Willie is able to scream stunning nearby enemies. Each character’s uniqueness is not only based on combat but also based on movement and abilities. All females can jump higher than males, Short Round is able to crawl through tiny holes in the wall, Henry is able to read historic markings, and Indy is able to swing over gorges using his whip.

What Traveller’s Tales has done differently from their previous Star Wars games is focus on puzzle solving to make the game more suitable for the genre. As you begin you’ll find yourself completing puzzles quickly without breaking a sweat but further in they’ll require more focus, concentration and time. Most puzzles require Indy and his sidekick to constantly leapfrog each other by repairing trucks, building bridges, activating switches and tons of other activities you’ll need to solve to pass the many segments held within each stage.

If you’re playing on your own with the frustrating AI partner you’ll notice the blinking message saying ‘Connect controller’ next to the second playable character. It might get a little annoying seeing this message constantly but the game is giving you a hint. Playing the game with a friend instantly increases the fun factor and helps make puzzle solving a little easier – two heads are better than one… Just be careful around those friends who find constantly pushing you off ledges hilarious.

The game is packed full of hidden items and secret passageways you can only find after completing the game which helps encourage you to play through a second and third time, nevertheless a single run only holds only a few hours of gameplay.

I quickly found myself addicted to Lego Indy – it’s a great title to pick up and play on a whim. The levels are simply laid out yet hold detailed and interactive environments. The boss battles Indy encounters are a tad annoying because of the constant respawn of enemies but that’s just how things roll in a boss battle.

Fans of the Lego Star Wars games, fans of Indiana Jones and gamers looking for a fun distraction even the younger ones can get into will enjoy Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures. Traveller’s Tales has done a fantastic job mixing co-op with adventure, combat and puzzle solving and added yet another great game to the Lego universe. I’m sure I won’t be the only one keeping an eye out for Lego Batman.
