Redrado's Review

Haven't played a 2d space sim for a long time. When I last did there were a heap of them and there probably still are. I didn't find this demo particularly exciting and it feels more like a "going through the motions" type game. At the very least it does remind you of snippets of past episodes, but I'd rather just watch the episodes again. Not surprising to find this game wasn't 3D (not really) given it was only a 100MB download. If someone got the rights to make a Battlestar Galactica game why not put the effort in and take a new edgy, unrestricted but solid approach thats also really captures the feel of the tv series. Probably very limited budget and expected low sales? This should have been the mobile phone version. I give it 3.5 yawns. Play it for laughs.

To begin with i am a massive fan of the modern Battlestar series, so perhaps my expectations of this game are a little high, but i think i've been pretty fair on it. This game is really quite cute, with a simple yet effective interface. The view is 3rd person, and there arent many keyboard controls to master, so even casual players can master it quickly. The missile's for example lock on to targets instantly and u just fire away.
Hitting targets with the blaster however is another tallent, due to the horrible on ice like handling of the space fighters. when u go to turn it feels more like you are drifting around a corner with barely any control, and the ability to counter correct is sloppy.

The graphics are very undemanding, and even an old system will be able to run with ease (eg: my system, P4 2.8ghz, 1.5 gig ram, 9600xt256mb etc) so the computer age should not really a problem. This however can leave people with more high end computers feeling rather ripped off for the $30 price tag, as it would looks very 1990's with a few flashy lighting effects thrown in.
Another thing i dont like is the horrid camera angle, it is looking at about 45 degrees down to the fighter from behind, and cannot be changed. Also with a game like this i would really have expected there to be a first person component to it, as there hasnt been a really good space sim since Freespace 2, i was hoping that this might finally be it. Sadly this does not deliver in my opinion.

In conclusion i think this game is good for a bit of now and again fun, but i would not get it if you arent a fan, but then i would sugest that if you want a proper 3rd person space combat sim then go for one of the starwars games, or for the best bang for your buck get Freespace 2, and considering the cost's are virtually the same, Freespace with its first person, immersive story, and wonderful (for its time) graphics and sounds to be a far better game.
Perhaps someone will take the Battlestar idea and make it into something to rival Freespace, but not at the moment it would seem.
