SWAT 4

Itīs not easy being mean. Thereīs this sickening trend towards do-gooderism at present. If itīs not sappy people in World of Warcraft healing each other, being white knight Paladins and, you know, being helpful, itīs others saving the world from villainy in countless ways. Space marines slaughtering chaos marines/the spawn of hell. Japanese schoolgirls ridding haunted houses of malevolent presences. Mealy mouthed hobbits shutting down Sauron. Jar Jar Binks.
![]() ![]() One of the best perks of being a SWAT guy is being able to carry around some humongo-badass weapons. Hereīs what you and the team will be toting in your hands as you bust criminal scum.
Colt M4A1 Rifle Itīs bad, itīs mean, itīs the most powerful weapon at your disposal in SWAT 4. Firing a .223 calibre bullet in either JHP (jacketed hollowpoint)- creates a big mess when it goes in; not so good against armour) or FMJ (full metal jacket - penetrates armour, but can also go right through your target and into people behind them) flavours. And it sounds very nice too. .45 Sub-machinegun (SMG) Same deal as the Colt, only a bit clunkier. It too is a JHP/FMJ optioned out piece of kit. Suppressed 9mm SMG/9mm SMG Suppression means quieter - not completely silenced, These babies throw bullets at a nice clip, and are easy to control. And as you can guess, hollowpoint or FMJ flavours are available. Pepper Ball Whoa, now this is cool. Itīs like a paintball gun - crazy amounts of rounds able to be carried - cept it throws out pepper spray balls. The range ainīt great, but more of your suspects will survive. If thatīs what you WANT, of course. Benelli Nova Pump/ Benelli Nova "Less Lethal" Shotgun Two shotties, same manufacturer, different outcome. The Nova pump will cut you in half with either 12 gauge or double aught shot, while the less lethal version shoots beanbag rounds, which will drop, but not permanently stop, your suspects. Although 'less lethal' when you talk about shotguns sounds like "a little bit pregnant'. It comes in a fetching shade of green too, which means that the crims will yell "pussy!" if they see it. Benelli M4 Super 90 When you have to put shot into literally every (expletive deleted) in the room. 5 rounds - 12 gauge or 00 buckshot rapid fire. Youīve seen it in CS, Soldier of Fortune and other games. Now try it here. A few missions in, things start to get hot. Iīve busted creepy serial killers, killed (sorry, "neutralised") arms dealers, and used my funky little zip tie cuffs on pretty much anyone who looked at me wrong. But there was something missing. These guys all had it coming. And shooting civilians means a failed mission, so thatīs a bit of a dead end, plot-wise. Good old gold and red team, my little squaddies, well, theyīre ripe for the plucking. And the good news is, theyīre worth caring (or not caring) about, because SWAT 4 is an exquisitely crafted gem that deserves your money. It should be noted that games like this where multiplayer is typically of limited numbers can be great fun. Playing this game on LAN in co-op is great. You can tell your buddy that youīre somewhere youīre meant to be, while adding to the tension by looping behind them and putting a round into his or her leg. "Watch out, thereīs a guy shooting me", they will yell, while you hightail it back to your "position". "On my way", youīll shout. Sooner or later they will stop taking the dumb pills and realise itīs you, but until then, tally ho. Being a SWAT cop ainīt all about bullets and trussing people up in stupid poses. Otherwise theyīd all be in Iraq, performing human rights violations. Thereīs actually a set protocol youīre meant to follow. Just because a bad guy is toting a rifle, doesnīt mean you can blow his head off. Well, actually, you can, but itīs not good for your final rating. No, what youīre supposed to do is yell out a warning, then if they donīt comply, then blow their head off. Itīs got to the stage where Iīve got it down to a fine art. Bind a mouse button for the "get down/under arrest" warning, then have the trigger button right next to it. If they even look like going for a weapon, itīs hammertime. "SWAT 4 is an exquisitely crafted gem that deserves your money" And on that topic, thereīs plenty of toys to use. Apart from your primary assault weapons (thereīs tonnes - check sidebar), thereīs a solid array of things that allow you to get crazy sneaky on the bad guys. Thereīs handguns, taser guns (funny to use on your friends), and some nasty tactical grenades - including trusty flashbangs and CS numbers.
The missions youīll be undertaking? Well, SWAT donīt handle pesky break and enters or car crashes, they handle the most dangerous and risky assignments. Which means that a lot of the time it takes more than just a stern voice to have the crims bow down before you. Every now and then you will literally be surrounding a suspect with armed cops and they will argue the point instead of doing what anyone else would do, and just shut up and get down on the ground. The game really conveys the tension of such a standoff, thereīs often suspects shouting, cops yelling, and it doesnīt take much for you to accidentally snap and fire. Matters arenīt helped in this respect by the odd AI mental breakdown where one of your mates will go buck wild and shoot the perp for the hell of it. You can either put it down to stress, or choose to think "rogue cop" and gun down the shooter. And then redo the mission. Next Page (2 of 2) _ _

Wow! I never picked this one up when it first came out. Had bad experiences with a few of the Tom Clancy Rainbow Six games. This is awesome! You play a leader of a 5 man SWAT team through numerous missions. The emphasis is on protecting life where possible, and so brings a fresh element of gameplay whereby your main objective is to subdue the perps and prevent harm to hostages. Adrenaline pumps as you yell for the crims to drop their weapons and hit the deck, but you have to be ready to drop them if they look like not complying or shooting at anyone. There are a great variety of lethal and non-lethal weapons to choose your kits from as well as flashbangs, gas grenades, tazars, pepper spray and bean bag shotguns. Realistic physics based on the HAVOK engine, and some really cool and creepy missions. This is a MUST BUY at this price. 10

AXELH's Review
Whist being a fan of this type of game SWAT4 just simply does'nt cut it,it's repetative and fairly easy.If you've played the demo that particular map is about 4th or 5th out of 13 maps and it does'nt get much harder. As always the 1st release of games is usally the best(at the time)because they are new and fresh not just updated graphics and new maps. This will be the last time i waste $90 on a game that will last you about 6 hours in single player.
