Day of Defeat: Source gets a facelift

Day of Defeat: Source has received the Team Fortress 2 treatment in a new update Valve rolled out today.

Day of Defeat: Source is a multiplayer class based World War II mod based on the Half Life 2 engine - or Source engine. The original Day of Defeat was a very popular mod for Half Life one, and DOD:S still pulls in player now.

The update includes a new map, achievements, the kill cam system from Team Fortress 2 and tweaks to games engine to make it look nicer.

Extra details for each new feature, direct from Valve,

Palermo
Introducing Palermo, a new Day of Defeat: Source map from Magnar "insta" Jenssen. This map's design was inspired by the Italian port city of the same name and was also based in part on "Salerno", a popular community map. Palermo features five capture points, four of which often flip back and forth between teams during play. The central plaza's two-person capture point is the map's key strategic area.

Steam Community Integration
Steam Community avatars will now appear next to each player name in the scoreboard, on the end-of-round panel, and as part of the newly-added freeze cam. Also, when you have friends playing with you in the game you'll be able to spot them using the new Friend icon next to their avatar on the scoreboard.

Achievements
There are now 51 unique achievements that you can earn for your play in-game. We've designed them to cover a variety of different play styles and specializations, and to recognize some of the rare and amazing feats people pull off while playing. For example, Jack of All Trades rewards players for earning a kill with a Machine Gun, Sniper Rifle, Rifle, Sub-Machine Gun, and a Grenade all in a single life.

Player Statistics
Day of Defeat: Source players can now show off their own stats and achievement progress in the Steam Community, using a method similar to Team Fortress 2's gameplay stats. Detailed statistics including usage of each weapon and class will be gathered displayed, giving players an at-a-glance view of each other's specific strengths.

Freeze Frame
Tired of getting killed by snipers without being able to tell where the fire is coming from? Day of Defeat: Source now has a freeze camera of your attacker, which will let you know where they are (or where they were when they shot you) and also allows you to take a screenshot for posterity. Also, if you score three consecutive kills against another individual player, you will be called out as "dominating" them.

To celebrate the new updates for the game Valve are holding a DOD:S free weekend, so if you're not sure if the updates are worth your money you can try the game out first and see. Are you going to play DOD:S this weekend?

Day of Defeat: Source Free Weekend

In-light of the recent patch release, Valve are offering another free to play weekend for Day of Defeat: Source, allowing those that haven't purchased the World War 2 first person shooter for two days and check out the newly released Jagd and Colmar maps.

The second free weekend will commence at 1:00 p.m. Pacific time on July 7th, and conclude at 1:00 p.m Pacific time on July 10th. We're looking forward to seeing you all there.

Day of Defeat: Source Trailer

A trailer showing off the upcoming new map JAGD, complete with a detonation gameplay mode in Day of Defeat: Source is now available for download. The cinematic trailer once again makes use of Valve's Source engine film effects such as motion blur and film grain. Grab it right here from GameArena files.

The Map Pack, which arrives just before DoD: Source's 1st birthday, introduces a new gameplay style, Detonation, in two brand new missions (Jagd, Colmar). In addition to the new missions and gameplay style, the Summer 2006 Update also introduces new technical features and gameplay enhancements to Day of Defeat: Source. Some of the new gameplay enhancements - such as spawn clip adjustments, improved hit location detection, and weapon balancing - were made after reviewing the player statistics gathered since the stats feature was added to DoD: Source earlier this year.

Day of Defeat: Source Free Weekend

Just in time for the store shelf retail release next Monday, Valve are offering everyone the chance to play the Day of Defeat: Source for free this weekend via the Steam online content delivery service. Players wishing to try out the WWII Source Engine modification simply need to install the Steam client and start pre-loading. The free trial is set to commence at noon this Friday PST, which is around 6am Saturday our time. Check out Valve's steampowered website for more information.

Day of Defeat offers an intense brand of online gameplay set in the WWII European Theatre of Operations. Players assume the role of light/assault/heavy infantry, sniper or machine-gunner class, and missions are based on historical operations. Day of Defeat: Source features enhanced graphics and sounds design to leverage the power of Source, Valve's new engine technology.
We've fired up a number of extra servers to give everyone the chance to have a bash, so make sure you jump online to give it a go this weekend!

Day of Defeat Update

The promised update for Day of Defeat: Source is now live. The patch fixes a bug that caused players to get stuck on other models and offers the map dod_kalt complete with lush high dynamic range lighting. As per usual, the update can be obtained simply by restarting your Steam client and letting the auto patcher do its thing.
