After over 3 years in development and eighteen months since the original demo was released, Team Dystopia are gearing up to release v1.0 of their cyberpunk themed Half-Life 2 mod. Skipping right over beta released, v1.0 is set to include 7 assault mode maps as well as an additional 4 for the new game mode "Phistball". There's 12 weapons, all meticulously balanced by the testing team, including 3 that weren't featured in the demo. There's also more implants, improved cyberspace play, support for the fancy Half-Life 2 engine features like bloom and HDR lighting and a revamped HUD.

It's set for release at 11am Saturday Feb 24th Sydney time, and we'll have some local Bigpond GameArena multiplayer servers up and ready to play on for launch.

Update: We've just got the go ahead for release, the Dystopia v1.0 client can now be downloaded right here from GameArena files.

Dystopia V1 is the greatest mod of all time. I know, I've been on their test team from the very very very very beginning.

Dystopia was good in the days of the Demo.

Sometime between the Demo and V1, however, the Dystopia team forgot exactly what they were making, and now the game sucks.

I paid the $10 donation to find that out. Very disappointed, the Dystopia demo was my favorite online game ever ;___;

It should be noted gamearena have a conflict of interest with this mod. Some of admins made it so they will say its really good and worth playing, the truth is its failure made poorly and gives the Australian industry a bad name with such work. They were going to make people pay for it but they gave up on that when people realised it wasn't very fun and then a lot of blame was put on valve for its support. Valve who incidently have a very strong Australian link and they guys working there from the TF team never made the mod that made them famous for money, they just had the talent to make a popular gameplay type that appealed to people, which dysotopia fails.

Hehe, but I didn't have anything to do with it and I always rag on Fuzzy about how other games are better than Dystopia :)

Astro, I can however tell you that everything you're speculating about in your post is completely incorrect. Regardless of your opinion of the mod, you really shouldn't be spreading such FUD, that's pretty weak.

Please tell me where I'm wrong Dan, when people like Fafnir from on the old team who told me these things. I could dig up some info to back up my claims but I don't come here lying reckelessly, I stated some clear facts there so its obvious I know something..maybe you can set the record straight. Why was there a huge delay from the initial release to 1.0 and how come the plans they set out from the start changed so much all the time? At least I attempt to give reasons.

astro you fail at flame bait.

Hmm the demo was pretty good. Implants and cyberspace make it quite interesting, but the maps were pretty average tbh.... only one route mostly and forcing ~20 players through 1 small door.... :/ silly

Despite what you might say, I've checked out V1 and it's still got great gameplay from when I played with the demo release, but there's just so many more things that add to it as a whole. I just hope that V1 kicks off well, instead of fizzing out like the demo.

When you make up things it helps to check if there are any experts around first. Team Dystopia NEVER claimed they were going to make people pay for it. As its a MOD and therefore UNLICENCED it would be ILLEGAL for them to do so and as they have made a computer game they aren't stupid, unlike you.

TF team never made the mod that made them famous for money, they just had the talent to make a popular gameplay type that appealed to people, which dysotopia fails

Team Dystopia made a game they wanted to play, not to make money. Dystopia appeals to thousands of people otherwise the demo wouldn't have recieved over 200,000 downloads in the first week alone. Just because you had no idea what you were doing doesn't mean it failed, it has been extremely successful and appeals to a great many people.

Why was there a huge delay from the initial release to 1.0

Because they have made a game? Not only that but they have made it in their spare time. They all have jobs and lives and work on Dystopia in their free time and your complaining about it taking too long to make? Why don't you try making a game as complex and polished as Dystopia V1 and see how long it takes you to complete.

how come the plans they set out from the start changed so much all the time?

Well as you obviously do not know what their plans were at the start how can you claim they are changing all the time?

At least I attempt to give reasons.

No you give bullsh!t and misinformation, I'm the one giving reasons.

Though at this point I do point out that I am not a part of Team Dystopia just someone who has been following them from the very beginning.

As I've been there for over a year before the demo was even released (ie: I've been a tester for Dystopia for the entire time its been in the making from the very very first alpha build all those years ago), I think I'd know a little more than you. They said if Valve picked them up like they have picked up other mods in the past then that would be great, but it wasn't the purpose of building the mod. Hence their intent was not to get a Source license, but rather to just make a mod that they wanted to play.

Stupid fanboy above, It was said at one stage, on their website that they had an intent to sell the final product and make you pay for it.

They have never claimed such things, mainly because they don't have the millions of dollars for a source license. So in closing, Stupid moron below.

Obviously these accusations have spouted from an ill-written faq and very hopeful devs.
I don't see why it really matters anyway, the fact is, it's free.

Although being able to pay to become a tester isn't something I totally agree with :/

You're helping cover the stats server that they've implemented, when you donate money. In return, they give you future builds, allow you to be supporter/tester/etc and all that jazz.

We said that we'd love the chance to create a full stand alone single player Dystopia game after we'd finished developing the multiplayer hl2 mod version.

The mod version was ALWAYS going to be free.
