Steam now has Early Access - play games before they're out

Valve today unveiled their newest addition to Steam - Early Access. In a press release they explained the move, which they claim will allow gamers to 'go behind the scenes' and see how the game is at various points of its development cycle. In other words, it's another name for Desura's Alphafunding.

Arma 3

Early Access has actually been in action for about two weeks, with Arma 3 allowing players alpha access since the 6th, but today it has been officially unveiled with a huge host of games to get into early. Along with Arma 3 you can buy Kinetic Void, StarForge, Kerbal Space Program and a host of non-space related games - you can see the entire list on Steam.

If I was to suggest some titles you might want to back, I'd go with Introversion's excellent Prison Architect, the aforementioned Kinetic Void (which looked excellent when it was going through Kickstarter) and Under The Ocean - the sequel to the brilliant side scrolling survival/building game Under The Garden. Have you grabbed any Early Access games yet? Which ones are you interested in? Let us know in the comments below!

I'm hesitant to pay for games before they're finished because the developers might get rockstar egos and go to Vegas with the profits.

Or you might get Arma 3: Colonial Marines, or Sim City: Arma.

So instead of selling us unfinished games or whatever and having us get upset they are going to sell us them unfinished in the Early Access stage so as we can provide free consulting/ feedback and funding so they can avoid as much backlash and loss in the short term and long term as possible? Or is it more of a Kickstarter with a Demo or Beta but with a price or all of the above?

Steam was probably taking a hit with indie devs giving early access away on Kickstarter, so they decided to hit back.

Wait a year and EA will do the same thing on Origin but everyone will get mad about it.

Ummmm maybe? Think of it like Minecraft, or Desura's Alphafunding for games like Project Zomboid - you get the game early, while it is in its alpha/beta stage and depending on the dev provide feedback and suggest features (all of the current devs do this.) Because it's on Steam you don't have to worry about updating or an update killing your pc (although I'm not one hundred percent sure about Steam's update qualification process, so this might not be accurate.)

As you'll notice, most of the games in the collection are sandbox type games, because they generally lend themselves better to this kind of iterative 'play while you update' kind of thing. Like Hoax said, it's a gamble - you get the game early and cheaper than the normal price, but it might turn out to be a completely different game made by a different developer while the original developer takes his mum to vegas like the sad fat hat wearing dork that he is.

Yeah looks great, was pretty happy with Greenlight and the Communtiy tab which was basically Desura but on Steam.
