Torment: Tides of Numenera hits Kickstarter - The Karach sings true

It was almost a year ago when we first heard word of Colin McComb's attempt to bring out a spiritual sequel to Planescape: Torment. And then last night it happened - Brian Fargo's development studio inXile Entertainment announced that the Kickstarter for said spiritual sequel - Torment: Tides of Numenera, was now looking for $900,000.

Six hours later they had met their goal. It is as of this moment, currently at $1,283,719 with 30 days to go - a phenomenal feat. So what is it? Like the ever-popular PS:T, Tides of Numenera will be a single player isometric RPG with a rich dialogue system. Tides of Numenera will have a great deal of choice and conseqence and will (obviously) be set in the RPG setting of Numenera's Ninth World, in which a medieval society sits atop the ruins of powerful but forgotten civilizations.

You can read more about Torment: Tides of Numenera over on the official Kickstarter - the team expect the game to be available by December 2014, but stretch goals may push that date into 2015. While we're talking about Kickstarter though, you should check out Race the Sun from my last funstravaganza - the demo is addictive as heck and they are currently 16 hours and $5000 short of their goal. Anyway, back to Torment - what do you think, are you excited for a new RPG? Have you backed it yet? Let us know in the comments below.

I see little point in backing it now that it's reached the goal. I'll just wait until it's done and throw my money at them then.

I know what you mean, although I wouldn't mind a sweet-ass old style cloth map. Also I am annoyed that nobody recognises how freaking great my headline is. I thought I'd come back to just waves of people calling for a statue in my honour.

Surely some of these larger development studios could afford to fund their own projects? Wasteland 2 earned Brian Fargo's mob enough to fund this project in excess of what they were originally asking for anyway...

well on top of actual production and all of that jazz, they also have to pay salaries - although a significant portion of even the higher end kickstarters tend to not add salaries into the price and bet against the success of the launched project. Also, as Jimmy James would say, capitalism doesn't work like that - you think if Hunchback of Notre Dame was running a deficit, Mickey Mouse would jump in and bail him out? Hell no.
