God of War: Ascension not being sold in Queensland due to lack of R18+

Oh Queensland. I love the fact that you aren't packed to the brim with people, but I hate your humidity, heat, insistence people wear ten layers of clothing when going out despite the humidity and heat. And now you are beginning to test my patience. Today Kotaku AU reported that promotional materials for God of War: Ascension were being removed from all Queensland stores, referring to an email which explained:

As Queensland has not passed legislation for the R18 rating for games we must remove all reference to God of War Ascension immediately, this includes all game slicks, posters, pamphlets, hand written signage, 2-way units and pre order signage.

At this time God of War Ascension cannot be sold in Queensland, this includes pre orders.

After speaking to employees at JB Hifi and EB Games I can confirm this is the case - no materials should have gone up at EB Games stores in Queensland in the first place and JB Hifi representatives across the state spent the morning taking promotional materials down. Both explained that naturally, if you pre-ordered Ascension or any other R18+ rated game in Queensland before their rating was confirmed, you will receive a full refund.

The R18+ issue will be discussed by the Queensland Parliament on the 12th this month - next Tuesday - so with some luck the R18+ rating will be in effect before God of War: Ascension's release on March 14th - although there are concerns the floods might take up too much time for parliament to deal with it. It is certainly surreal to see the listings for the game on EB Games and JB Hifi's websites explaining 'Non-QLD only' - here's hoping we won't have to see that kind of thing for long.

The new Army of TWO game has been listed as "Non-QLD only" for at least a week now (as well as 2 Ninja Gaiden games). I can't wait for someone to purchase it across the border and then try and trade it in at a QLD store.

Being denied a game like GOW is pretty offensive.

I'm now taking orders for QLD's who wish to purchase the game and have me mail it to them.

I won't be mailing you Army Of Two, however. I love you too much.

It's a tautology.

Newman thinks Queensland adults aren't mature enough to play grown-up games.

The proof is that Queensland elected a Newman government.

Yeah because this is exclusively a decision made by the Premier.

Dumbass...

So given that some previously MA15-rated games are going to be rated R18 in the future under the new guidelines, QLD will be even further behind the rest of the world than they used to be.

Good place for a video games bar.

That's an odd juxtaposition, isn't it? Video Games at a bar in a palce where they don't feel video games are for anyone over 18... So, by all means, fill your brains with booze and play video games, because you're old enough to drink a mind numbing toxin, cooked down into a delicious amber fluid. Have sex in the bathroom if you like because you're both adults and you can do what you want...

But despite the recognition of these facts, you aren't able to play a game that tackles adult issues? With that in perspective, what does the government think of the gamers bar? In their mind is it just a ball pit full of adults?

It's not as awesome as a ball pit, it's just video games.

More places need ball pits.
