Guild Wars 2 players find bans in their stockings after Wintersday

During the Wintersday holiday event recently, players stumbled onto something exciting - by crafting an item requiring one ectoplasm (ecto for short), six mithril ingots and a Pristine Snowflake they could make a rare earring. Breaking down that earring would then give the player back some mithril, the Pristine Snowflake and up to three ectos. As fans of both the first and second games will be aware, ectos are very rare - and the abundance of new ectos on the market would have an alarming effect.

And now, as spotted by Massively, ArenaNet have begun banning people. An actual number is tough to find, but it was enough that if these players were allowed to continue unchecked (read: unbanned, keeping all of their ectos) it would destroy the economy. Fans of the game will recall that this isn't the first time they have done this, but backed down amidst outrage. This time however, they won't be backing down, with ArenaNet's Support Liason explaining in a thread on the topic:

We’ve been more than kind, in the past, and everyone needs to own up to his/her errors and recognize: We all are part of the game economy, and those who exploit it are hurting the rest of us.

If this statement were a person it would be Bill Gates it's so freaking rich. Everyone needs to own up to his/her errors? You're damned right they do ArenaNet. And if an exploit pops up, it is not the users who are at fault - it is ArenaNet. They made a mistake and people took advantage of it. If ArenaNet don't want people tanking the economy through exploits, then maybe they shouldn't put such exploits in the game.

Of course, it's tough to catch every single issue - particularly when you are making an MMO. But it's not like ArenaNet don't have other options available. They are capable of fixing the game's economy - they already have in this case - so fix the item, fix the economy and move on. If you really can't fix the economy without dipping into player's inventories and taking stuff, then you apologise, explain why and do so. Banning players because you screwed up is little more than a good way to get people upset and paranoid.

I kind of feel like this wouldn't be the issue it is without Guild Wars 2's cash shop - since you can trade gold for gems and vice versa, the ecto exploit gives some players a method of gaining generally unobtainable goods without putting in actual cash or an assload of effort. Of course, Guild Wars 2 is ArenaNet's game and they are free to do whatever they want and ban whoever they want. If they want people to trust them however, they should probably stop blaming their users for their mistakes. What do you think? Am I all fired up over nothing? Let us know in the comments below!

Yeah god forbid someone would want to take advantage of an avenue that allows them progress their character. It's not like this is an MMO or anything is it? :P

It's one thing to miss something like this in the massive lines of programming text and accidently have it reach the players. It's another thing for some of those players to say: "Hey, look, this is obviously an error and clearly cheating... So I'll cheat!".

At least, in my opinion, the difference is clear.

I believe the onus is on the developer to ensure their game works the way they intended. Banning people for something that should have been caught in testing is ridiculous - and yes, probably happened because of the real world currency implications.

The Secret World has an "End of the World" event running, and monsters that are supposed to be a challenge (or certain death if you're a newbie like me who picked it up during the B2P switch/holiday period) can be easily killed by luring them into a safe area, letting you farm monsters that are intended for people much higher level than you. Funcom should have thought it out better and have admitted as much, but they're not too worried about the implications because their cash shop is separate to the ingame economy.

How the hell can they justify banning people?

Removing the ectos and ill-gotten gold? Sure. Banning people is insane though.

If it was a subscription MMO they wouldn't get banned, because then they'd lose customers. But with B2P, the people will probably go purchase another copy of the game and play on, meaning the developers win.

Indeed. For ArenaNet, banning people probably brings in money. This is sure to generate them plenty of good will, too :/ Apparently they aren't too concerned about that.

I am interested in the "alarming effect" apart from the banning of course.

Well, I don't agree. I could totally understand a game of this size having glitches and problems with code that take weeks to identify and clean up even after they are common knowledge, but that doesn't forgive a player for making the choice to ruin the game by exploting it... Same thing happened to Day Z with tents and duped gear.

That being said, I spose banning is a VERY strong step to take. Clearing out the duped items, sure. Maybe even a loss of revenue from those people who constantly made and sold them? Fine. Having to buy the whole game again??

Won't be buying Guild Wars 2 now. That's a harsh move...

It's weird - think about the outcry if Hammerpoint did something like banning players because they knew those players would just repurchase.

Wait a second...

They lost my good will when they asked people to play more, in around about way to experience the other races stories. I was like srsly have they seen how grindy and spammy this game is! Since when do you have to buckle up and swallow day upon day of boredom just to get to the good bits... Its not a subscription why so grindy! GW2 has some great things but I have to agree with u Keto.

Easy, the T&C likely say exploting is a bannable offence, if you stumble on an exploit you report iot so they can fix it. if you continue to exploit it and get found out you have no leg to stand on and some people are so dumb they'll openly chat about it in chat channels too.

Can't speak of this particular exploit since i only played GW2 for a few weeks b4 getting bored with it but from playing LOTRO over a 6yr period it's the same deal, exploits are there whether intentional or not but in that game the T&C clearly say using exploits is a bannable offence no questions asked and talking about exploits is a bannable offence and talking about being banned is a permaban if warning are ignored.

number 17 in GW2 Code of COnduct - You will not exploit any bug in Guild Wars 2 and you will not communicate the existence of any such exploitable bug (bugs that grant the user unnatural or unintended benefits) either directly or through public posting, to any other user of Guild Wars

In WarZ the T&C states you can't have a refund even if you ask for one and have legitimate cause to get one.

They ALSO state that, for more information, you should look at someone elses T's&C's, which don't say anything about being refused a refund. ;)

Exploits are a funny thing with some being acceptable and some not.

Exploits like this (essentially duping) in an MMO are not acceptable; sorry GameArena but you are dead wrong on this one. A ban is excessive - it would have been better to delete all the characters equipment/bank/bag inventory/75% of their money.

At what stage in modern gamer culture did it become OK to exploit?

it's not like the people that got banned, did so because they "accidentally" did this a few times, ANet aren't banning anyone that deconned an earring or two, these folks actually worked at it.

if nothing else, they deserve the ban for being too stupid to see something like this would happen...
