Gamers flip out over The War Z's release on Steam
The War Z, the controversy mired zombie survival MMO, hit Steam yesterday - causing a mass of backlash as it did. Costing $13.49 (10% off full price) for the base game, it quickly shot to the top of Steam's Top Sellers list - and to the top of Reddit as gamers grew incensed at its existence on Steam and what they considered discrepancies between its Steam bio and what exists in the game itself.
A Steam user named Brushie Brushie caught sight of this amazing reflection When The War Z originally hit Steam, it called itself a Foundation Release, not an Alpha or Beta - and it claimed it had private server rentals and an experience point system with skills you could put points into. Speaking to Kotaku, Hammerpoint Interactive's own Sergey Titov defended his game against some of the problems mentioned - The War Z does have hardcore mode, wherein death results in the deletion of your character and the map is apparently either 100 square kilometres or over 100 square kilometres. Foundation Release means the same thing as Alpha or Beta apparently, or maybe it doesn't - either way, the game is perpetually a finished product and a work in progress. The other, more blatantly non-existent issues people had with The War Z, like the claim it had private servers and skill points, are now "fixed" as Hammerpoint have now updated their Steam page to reflect the actual state of the game, instead of the possible state of the game in the future. Below you can see the original Steam bio for The War Z taken by Xlephon on Reddit, compared with The War Z's bio page today.
Along with all of this the internet is full of stories about Hammerpoint Interactive doctoring images and blatantly misrepresenting the state of the game - and they are still apparently banning people for blinking the wrong way. How Titov expects to get an accurate reflection of player satisfaction when they ban anyone who dissents is beyond me, but I'm sure the masters behind Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing have something amazing up their sleeves. To cut a long story short - You Probably Still Shouldn't Buy The War Z.
