Jeffrey Yolahem explains his take on Far Cry 3

Jeffrey Yolahem - Lead Writer on Far Cry 3 - did an interesting interview with The Penny Arcade Report today, explaining the ways he feels many of the game's critics have had interesting analyses, but have missed what he was aiming for. It is chock full of spoilers, so don't click that link or continue reading this article if you haven't yet finished the game. That said, let's take a look at it shall we?

Once again the best friend jellies are here to warn you about spoilers

“It’s a first-person game, and Jason is a 25-year old white guy from Los Angeles. From Hollywood. So his view of what’s going on on this island is his own view, and you happen to be looking through his eyes, so you’re seeing his view. It’s set on an island in the South Pacific, so immediately the thing that comes to mind is the white colonial trope, the Avatar trope. I started with that, and it’s like, ‘Here’s what pop culture thinks about traveling to a new place,’ and the funny thing is, that’s an exaggeration of most games, they just don’t expose it.”

And what do we have here? Why, is this a Spoiler Alert on Far Cry 3? I think it is!

Many writers will be familiar with the self-insert character - when the author writes a story with themself in the lead, making the character better in every way than everyone else. And that is exactly what Jason appears to be - he suffers some set backs, sure, but he is still way too capable for words. Why? Because that’s how games play out.

Jeffrey also discusses the ending, which he feels was integral to understanding the nature of Far Cry 3 - if you don't finish it, you won't have all of the information. Seriously, don't read on if you haven't yet finished the game, we're about to talk about the ending with Citra:

“It’s like okay, if you chose her, I’m gonna give you extremes of what you want,” Yohalem explained. “So you have this extreme sex scene with her which is very graphic with the sounds he’s making, and she stabs him, and there’s extreme amounts of blood. At the end, she says, ‘you win.’”

And what did I have to say about the ending with Citra?

If you choose to return, Jason lives - and he will find a way to become a normal, well adjusted member of society. If you choose to stay though, Jason dies. But, as Citra says, he wins. He wins the game and he dies, because he rejected reality.

Ok, so it's not a complete match with his idea, but that is beside the point. The point is I win. See what I did there? The interview itself is a good read and I've seen a lot of conversation starting because of it - check it out at The PA Report. And if you want to read my fantastic piece on Far Cry 3, you can do so right here. As for me, I'm going to go put on some shades and get back to doing what we at GameArena do best - blowing everybody's minds.

Interesting article but it only proves how crap the writing was in FC3. That no one was able to see the hidden message in the story is not the fault of the audience but a failure of the writer to adequately convey his message.

I must admit I gave up looking for meaning in the story when I realised that it made absolutely no difference what I did. I remember the cut scene when Vaas had tied a rock around Jason's feet and was about to drop him into a lake and all during his god damn boring speech I was thinking "Why can't I just wrap my hands around this guys neck and choke him to death? The ropes around my hands would have made a perfect noose". Or why couldn't I just shoot Hoyt when we were alone in his office rather be forced to listen to him prattle on?

No choices, no control, so why bother looking for meaning?

SPOILER ALERT:
The only time in the whole silly campaign you actually get a choice is at the end and it took me all of 2 seconds to decide to save Liza and the rest of Jason's friends. After all, Citra was a mad crazy bunny boiler who'd just kidnapped Jason's friends and now she was telling me to kill them (even though I'd spent the last 2 weeks trying to save their sad sorry arses). Why the hell would anyone choose that option?

And when Dennis accidentally stabs Citra am I supposed to feel sorry? No, when Citra's telling me she loves me as she slowly dies all I'm thinking is "Serves you right you freaky nutcase".

Crappiest story ever. Although the gameplay is good otherwise. At the moment I am replaying the game and having great fun running around the island harrasing the pirates, laying proximity mines, shooting patrols etc etc all without having to redo the story (although I may do just enough to unlock the second island).
