You can choose Bioshock Infinite's reversible cover design!
Over the past week there was a bit of a furore surrounding Bioshock Infinite, raised when a bunch of fans got upset at the game's cover art. Who gives a damn about cover art when the game sounds excellent? Who knows, but Irrational has decided to appease said fans, by giving Bioshock Infinite a reversible cover - and setting up a poll with six designs for fans to choose from.
How... how could they do this to us?! The cover art for Bioshock Infinite features no Songbird, no Elizabeth, just Booker with a gun looking gritty. I thought it was just bland, but according to some this was the video game equivalent of a war crime and people across the internet jumped at the chance to literally judge a game by its cover. Ken Levine gave an interview with Wired to explain the cover choice. It was made for mass market appeal, to hook in the frat boys and gamers who don't follow the scene: “I looked at the cover art for BioShock 1, which I was heavily involved with and love, I adored. And I tried to step back and say, if I’m just some guy, some frat guy, I love games but don’t pay attention to them… if I saw the cover of that box, what would I think? And I would think, this is a game about a robot and a little girl. That’s what I would think. I was trying to be honest with myself. Trust me, I was heavily involved with the creation of those characters and I love them.” In other words, like all covers, it was designed by marketing to market the game. As a piece of paper on front of the game's DVD or Blu-ray, it can in no way affect Bioshock Infinite. Nevertheless, it was good of Irrational to figure out this work-around - and if I get a boxed copy of Bioshock Infinite, I will definitely flip it to the reverse cover. Which had better be #6, not some 19th century comic art in eye gouging bright orange - which is the most popular I assume as a sort of screw you! to frat boys. And taste.
