Planescape: Torment spiritual sequel under consideration
Colin McComb recently finished up his work on Wasteland 2 and he is now looking for something new to begin work on - and according to his blog he is most interested in Torment. By which I mean Planescape: Torment, not that he is interested in watching people suffer.
The world's most handsome protagonist It won't be Planescape: Torment, because Wizards of the Coast aren't willing to license the Planescape setting out - but as learned by RPG Codex, inXile - the company behind Wasteland 2 - owns the Torment IP - and McComb is looking to work with that to make a spiritual sequel, saying he hopes fans will trust him to make a sequel worthy of its excellent predecessor. Of course, it's early days yet - currently McComb is just building the team to make the game - sort of pre-pre-production. As he mentioned to Eurogamer, he has already discussed the matter with Chris Avellone - who has given him his blessing to move forward with it, though whether Avellone himself will be a part of it is up in the air: "The Project: Eternity Kickstarter took them in a different direction than a direct successor. I told Chris that I would not work on a Torment successor without his approval. We talked about it for a bit, and he told me that he was entirely comfortable with me moving forward on a Torment game without him, and he gave me his explicit blessing to do it. Right now he's incredibly involved with Project: Eternity, and I do not want to distract him from a project that is incredibly important to his company. With that said, I would be happy - no, wait, overjoyed - to have him on board in any capacity whatsoever." Personally I'm thrilled about the entire concept - although I can't fathom why the Torment IP is important - it seems if you're going to make a spiritual sequel to a 13 year old game you probably don't have to worry about name recognition - particularly for a title like PST. I imagine some old lady who only reads newspapers, who inexplicably loved Planescape Torment but hates all other games - she might buy it because of the Torment IP I guess.
