Planescape: Torment spiritual sequel under consideration

Colin McComb recently finished up his work on Wasteland 2 and he is now looking for something new to begin work on - and according to his blog he is most interested in Torment. By which I mean Planescape: Torment, not that he is interested in watching people suffer.

The world's most handsome protagonist

It won't be Planescape: Torment, because Wizards of the Coast aren't willing to license the Planescape setting out - but as learned by RPG Codex, inXile - the company behind Wasteland 2 - owns the Torment IP - and McComb is looking to work with that to make a spiritual sequel, saying he hopes fans will trust him to make a sequel worthy of its excellent predecessor.

Of course, it's early days yet - currently McComb is just building the team to make the game - sort of pre-pre-production. As he mentioned to Eurogamer, he has already discussed the matter with Chris Avellone - who has given him his blessing to move forward with it, though whether Avellone himself will be a part of it is up in the air:

"The Project: Eternity Kickstarter took them in a different direction than a direct successor. I told Chris that I would not work on a Torment successor without his approval. We talked about it for a bit, and he told me that he was entirely comfortable with me moving forward on a Torment game without him, and he gave me his explicit blessing to do it. Right now he's incredibly involved with Project: Eternity, and I do not want to distract him from a project that is incredibly important to his company. With that said, I would be happy - no, wait, overjoyed - to have him on board in any capacity whatsoever."

Personally I'm thrilled about the entire concept - although I can't fathom why the Torment IP is important - it seems if you're going to make a spiritual sequel to a 13 year old game you probably don't have to worry about name recognition - particularly for a title like PST. I imagine some old lady who only reads newspapers, who inexplicably loved Planescape Torment but hates all other games - she might buy it because of the Torment IP I guess.

You totally should, it's such an amazing game. A lot of old genre defining titles are built upon by their predecessors, making going back to the original parent game somewhat difficult for someone accustomed to newer advances in design . While PST suffers from that a little in its UI, mostly it holds up because it's all about the story, and there are so few well told stories in games.

Torment was freaking amazing. And now with all the resolution mods you can play it on a modern PC and not have everything blown up to jumbo proportions.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this one. It's an ambitious goal, and we all know ambitious in videogames is code for " almost guaranteed to fail."

Bonus points for the guy not being Peter Molyneaux, though.

If WotC aren't licensing out Planescape then I would prefer whatever this dude makes to simply be original and not draw from any of the lore of PS:T.

A spiritual successor in terms of game play and depth of story yes; PS:T lore no. Follow in the foot steps of Project Eternity which aims to spiritually succeed Baldur's Gate et al. through style rather than specific lore.
