PAX Australia headed to Melbourne - registration open now

The convention known as PAX Australia is definitely headed to Melbourne, PAX President Robert Khoo and Victorian Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Businesses Louise Asher announced today. The event will be held at the Melbourne Showgrounds and runs from July 19th to the 23rd and has been locked down for next year and 2014.

You can now buy your tickets for PAX Australia at the official registration site - online tickets are $45 a day, or you can snag a three day pass for $115.

Some of this will all seem familiar to people who read our previous article on the issue, but since nobody at PAX Australia would submit to my psychic interrogation techniques or dead birds sent through the mail, we had to wait until now to confirm it. Ms Asher said of the event:

“This is the first time the event has been held outside the United States and attracting PAX Australia to Melbourne was a major coup for Victoria. It is a great opportunity to showcase games culture in Australia to the rest of the world, and the exposure around the region and the world that Melbourne’s games industry will gain from the event, and the number of international and domestic visitors that will be drawn to Melbourne, cannot be underestimated.”

So now you can plan out not just July next year, but July 2014 too! I know what I will be doing - continuing not to go to Melbourne, sorry PAX. How about you, are you booking your hotel now and punching yourself in the nose to deaden your sense of smell in preparation? Let us know in the comments below!

For someone who has never heard of PAX, this article doesn't help me much. wtf is it, in greater detail? Just a showcase event?

It includes tabletop games and other general geekery, too.

$115 for 3 days sounds a bit expensive, I'll probably turn up one day and have a piss-up the next

I'm pretty sure EB's Expo 3 day pass was $149, which makes PAX cheaper by comparison.

I'm still confused - what exactly do you do there? If it's just playing games why can't I just do that at home?
