Harvey Smith not sure about Dishonored 2

Dishonored is a frontrunner for Game of the Year. It's an amazing game and one I was happy to spend my weekend immersed in, blinking my way behind guards and throwing them in dumpsters. Anyone who has played it knows Arkane Studios have put an incredible amount of effort into filling out the game's lore too, with books throughout the world explaining all sorts of information about Dishonored, the city of Dunwall and the Isles. In this time of monetisation and DLC, a sequel seems like a certainty - but Harvey Smith isn't convinced there should be one. In an interview with Kotaku, Smith explained:

"Part of me would love to see future games leverage this world... and part of me would love it if the vault door was just closed and that's it. This is your one view into the Empire of the Isles and into the city of Dunwall."

I don't know about you, but I am torn on this. Part of me loves the idea of developers recognising their creation is complete, knowing they have told the story they wanted to tell and being content to let it be what it is. Too many stories in all media have been drawn out long beyond their time, forced to die a shadow of their former greatness by people not willing to let go.

On the other hand, it seems like such a waste to leave it at this, there are so many things I want to know more about. I want to learn more about The Outsider and why ancient peoples designed music to suppress his influence, see the city that came before Dunwall and visit Morley and Tyvia and Serkonos. I want to learn how Corvo met the Empress, fight sea battles with witches who summon whales and explore the uncivilised Pandyssian Continent. What do you think, would you want a Dishonored sequel? Or maybe it could continue along its transmedia route, with animations and books? Let us know in the comments below.

Harvey might not be sure about it, but whoever holds the purse strings will be making the decision rather than him. Personally, I want more. I don't care if they make it a frigging dance rhythm game set in Dunwall, I'll play it to learn more about the world they've made.

I can't find the relevant post at the moment, but one of the things Smith has said he loves about Bethesda is that they give him complete creative control - in no way is he beholden to executives when it comes to what games he makes. Like you said though, he better make Dishonored 2 - even if it is a DDR clone.
