New R18+ Classification guidelines released

As spotted by Kotaku AU, the new guidelines for R18+ classification have been revealed. And it is, sadly, a little depressing. Primarily because of one addition, the ridiculous, regularly debunked claim that video games have a higher impact than film or television because of their interactivity.

Interactivity is an important consideration that the Board must take into account when
classifying computer games. This is because there are differences in what some sections of
the community condone in relation to passive viewing or the effects passive viewing may
have on the viewer (as may occur in a film) compared to actively controlling outcomes by
making choices to take or not take action.

The R18+ classification for video games has some added restrictions over the R18+ classification for film and television, namely when it comes to drug use and sex - and all because of that 'interactivity' nonsense. While under R18+ both sex and drug use are allowed, restrictions apply to 'depictions of actual sexual activity' 'depictions of simulated sexual activity that are explicit and realistic' 'drug use related to incentives and rewards' and 'interactive illicit or proscribed drug use that is detailed and realistic.'

Of course, as it was before these guidelines are just that - guidelines and video games will continue to be reviewed on a case by case basis. You can read the guidelines for yourself here. All in all, it could be worse I imagine - what do you think? Let us know in the comments below!

Better then nothing... Still f***ing pathetic, considering I can rent a movie where a woman injects heroine into her nipples, but better then nothing.

You're lucky to get this at all, and it may not last. Be happy with what you get and remember to take voting more seriously.

considering games with interactive sex and drug use have been released pre-18+ rating i doubt it will be a huge problem

it would have to be a very pornographic game, or a game promoting heroin instead of medkits to get rejected by the sound of it

take voting more seriously.

Except this was never an issue people could vote on (bar the AGs) and if the libs were still in power this wouldn't have happened at all.
