Ubisoft has gotten rid of their ridiculous DRM
In an outstanding interview with Rock, Paper, Shotgun yesterday, Ubisoft's Stephanie Perotti and Michael Burk - the Worldwide Director for Online Games and Director of Corporate PR - explained that Ubisoft has listened to customer feedback and removed their controversial Always-On DRM system - with the changes in place since June of last year, excusing a few hiccups.
We have listened to feedback, and since June last year our policy for all of PC games is that we only require a one-time online activation when you first install the game, and from then you are free to play the game offline. Titles now only require a single online activation after installation, with Anno 2070's three activation limit also noted in the interview as an isolated case. For those unfamiliar with Ubisoft's previous DRM strategy, titles like Assassin's Creed 2 and The Settlers 7 required a constant connection to the internet - and if you lost access you would no longer be able to play. The interview is an excellent read, with RPS asking how Ubisoft's previously mentioned 95% piracy rate for PC games lines up with their claim their DRM has been 'a success' and inquiring into the disparate release dates of console and PC Ubisoft titles. It's very strange Ubisoft didn't come out and proclaim to the heavens their Always-On DRM was no longer going to be implemented before now. A look back demonstrates this is the case with titles like Rayman Origins, Driver: San Francisco and the aforementioned Anno 2070 having more reasonable DRM solutions, but many people thought it was just on hiatus - waiting for the likes of Assassin's Creed 3 or Far Cry 3 before making its return. Perhaps now people know, Ubisoft's PC sales will increase from 12% last quarter. What do you think, will you buy Ubisoft games again now these changes are in place? Let us know in the comments below!
