Steam Greenlight now requires $100 per submisison
You may or may not have read my piece on Steam Greenlight last week, the new service allowing independent developers a chance to be featured on Steam by appealing directly to gamers. As I mentioned, Greenlight has had a few hiccups since its launch - first among them being the waves of stupid submissions for games people just want but can't find online like Wizardry 8, games people want but aren't currently on Steam like Battlefield 3, games people want which haven't yet been released like Crysis 3 and stupid awful garbage nobody in their right mind wants, like a billion Minecraft clones.
Valve have figured out a method of stemming that tide however, today announcing that future submissions will require a $100 fee to submit a game to Greenlight. The fee is not an attempt to make money however - they just want to limit the garbage which gets through - and with that in mind, the money will go to the Child's Play charity - which gives kids in hospitals games and stuff to make their time less miserable. Which is awesome. Along with the fee, Valve explained that Greenlight has been made more manageable for viewers, limiting the number of titles you see to a mix of popular and new games you haven't yet rated - making it much less of a daunting mess than it was previously. Thank goodness.
