Command & Conquer: Generals 2 becomes... Command & Conquer?

The game known as Command & Conquer: Generals 2 will no longer be Command & Conquer: Generals 2, EA announced last night. Instead it marks the first installment in a new free-to-play service titled Command & Conquer. The game will still utilise the Frostbite 2 engine, so expect beautiful graphics and destructible environments, but now all of the currently developed material for the game will be available to gamers for free - and it will be followed up by future additions to the Command & Conquer service set in the Red Alert and Tiberium universes. Said Jon Van Canegham - Vice President and General Manager at EA of the surprise announcement in a press release:

"We are thrilled about this opportunity to transform Command and Conquer into a premier online experience. For nearly two decades, this franchise has existed as something you buy; now we are creating a destination where our fans will be able to access the entire Command and Conquer universe, starting with Generals and continuing with Red Alert, Tiberium, and beyond. With Frostbite 2, we are able to keep an emphasis on the AAA quality our consumers expect while staying true to the RTS gameplay they know and love – all available online for free."

If you're interested in signing up for a chance at closed beta access, you can do so via the official site of course - and below we have a trailer for the game/service - you can also watch the trailer in our videos library if that's your bag. I'm not entirely certain what the Command & Conquer fanbase did to piss off EA, but they sure know how to get revenge. Tell us what you think of this announcement in the comments below.

I'm not entierly sure what the downside is here. It's C'n'C, with better graphics? That sounds like a win to me... Someone cure my ignorance.

You might be right squid. I hope you are, actually. But it kind of feels like EA is abandoning their fans, who would be more than willing to pay $80 for a brand new installment in the excellent Generals series, to appease some unknown audience of people who apparently aren't willing to actually buy the game. Which is crazy.

Why are they doing this?

Hmmm, on instinct it seems like a GOOD thing that the game is free. What's the difference that bothers people bewteen "Generals" and vanilla C'n'C? I remember playing both, but I don't remember any differences so staggering (other then minor plot differences, and frankly, Kane was kinda neat! :D ) that would make me balk at this idea. More information please. :(

The difference I would expect is, awards and premium options, so you'll be able to get 3 types of infintary units standard, but if you pay $1 you can get a 4th for the next 24hours, or $15 for better defences for the month, stuff like that,

Pretty much your basic "Free to play - Pay to win" model

Kane wasn't in Generals. In fact Generals should never have had the C&C name attached to it, because it was a completely different RTS.

Which isn't to say it wasn't a good game. I enjoyed it (especially Zero-Hour) but you're right its a completely different game.

I know Kane wasn't in Generals, that's why I mentioned him. I didn't feel all that different to me... Instead of harvesting, you had helicopters collecting stuff. As for the "Pay to win" thing, if that happens that's bad for ANY franchise, despite the name change.

I hope they keep the three way USA - GLA - China thing. That was a really fun dynamic, even if it was a bit racist.

I used to know a 100% sure way to win when playing with my friends. Play a China Infantry General, produce nothing but machine gun footsoliders and cars that carry machine gun foot soliders... Then attempt to move them.

Crashed the awful computer lan set up at the internet cafe 100% of the time, after which you say: "Well, obviously my army was so huge it was going to destory you all, so I win".

I don't have many friends any more, as you could guess.

That isn't racist, limimi. Arabic people forced into slave labour by terrorists really DO want shoes!
