DayZ going stand alone
DayZ going stand alone
Last night, Dean "Rocket" Hall announced that Day Z - the incredibly, ridiculously popular persistent world mod for Arma 2 that might be my favourite game... ever - will become its own game, built alongside the mod by Bohemia Interactive, with Hall at the lead. Rocket announced it in a post on the new official site for the stand alone version - and while it is currently fairly empty, updates are promised soon.
The game is being developed under what Hall calls 'the Minecraft model' - in other words, you can pay a discounted price before the game is finished, which gives you access to the alpha and beta builds along with the full game upon completion. If you recall, GameArena revealed this to be the plan way back in June - because we were ground floor on this stuff. No word yet on how much it will cost exactly, but can you really put a price on being terrified of fellow human beings and watching zombies run about in circles on all fours? No. You can not. Mod development will continue, as pointed out in the announcement post, Development and updates of the mod will continue in parallel with the development of the game, so anyone who is playing the mod now will be able to continue to do so. The project will follow the Minecraft development model; fast iterations with the community alpha available for a heavily discounted price. The stand alone game announcement follows on from some other excellent news about the mod yesterday, which has passed 1 million unique players since its debut only four months ago. This is a stark rise from its count 1 month ago, where it was bustling around the half million mark - no doubt the recent Summer sale on Steam had something to do with it and because of the mod's success ARMA 2 Combined Operations has been in the top ten selling games for the past three months. These are great achievements for the New Zealand born Hall, a talented and dedicated developer who has put a lot of effort into the project. GameArena has started a DayZ Vodcast called the Day Zed Show - you can watch the second episode here, and if you're after more DayZ mod footage be sure to watch Abzolutely Fabulouz.
