Do you have mad stacks of cash just lying about? Are you tired of looking at your surroundings in FPS games with a mouse like some sort of chump? Well the Oculus Rift is for you! You might have heard of the Oculus Rift back when John Carmack first announced the BFG edition of Doom 3 - as it has been designed to work with the Virtual Reality headset, immersing you fully into the world of Mars circa 2145. Now further along in its production, the Oculus Rift has gone to Kickstarter to get some funding and get going.

It's important to note that this is just the first revision of the Rift, designed for developers to build games and software around. That hasn't stopped people from getting on board however and the project sped past its initial goal of $275,000 to currently sit at $618,263 with 30 days to go. To get your hands on one of the Rifts plus the SDK, tools to work with the Unreal and Unity engines and a copy of Doom 3 BFG edition you'll be looking at a buy in of $300 plus $30 for international shipping, and $335 (plus $30) will get you a t-shirt and poster to go with it.

The Rift boasts some impressive specs compared to VR headsets of the past, with 1280x800 (640x800 per eye) resolution, 90° horizontal and 110° vertical field of view and 6D head tracking with ultra low latency. Its weight comes in at around 220 grams - a good deal lighter than the 750 grams of Nintendo's old Virtual Boy. Embedded below is the Oculus Rift's Kickstarter pitch video, featuring the creator Palmer Luckey along with John Carmack, Cliff Bleszinski and Gabe Newell all touting the device. You can also watch it in our videos library if you like - and you can check out the Oculus Rift Kickstarter page right here! What do you think, are VR headsets the way of the future or a sad gimmick?
