Fez updates - with save breaking bug
Polytron released a patch last month for their blockbuster Xbox Live Arcade title Fez, which had an unfortunately horrible bug in it - a bug which broke the save games after the update was applied. Clearing the system cache solved the problem for some users, but for others there was no respite - your saves are gone and you had no choice but to start from scratch.
Naturally, they pulled the update in order to fix it, but today it has been put back on the store - the same, save-ruining update. Talking on the Polytron blog the decision was explained - it's too expensive: Microsoft gave us a choice: either pay a ton of money to re-certify the game and issue a new patch (which for all we know could introduce new issues, for which we’d need yet another costly patch), or simply put the patch back online. They looked into it, and the issue happens so rarely that they still consider the patch to be “good enough”. You should check out the full blog if you have the time, it's a very interesting insight into the update process of the Xbox 360. While fans who are bitten by this bug (less than one percent apparently) are no doubt upset, it's difficult not to side with Polytron - while they would no doubt make it perfect if they could, it's a bit rich for them to have to pay for the privilege. And why does Microsoft charge someone to make a game work better on their console? Baffling. Are you a fan of Fez? I thought it was alright, but not the epiphany of gaming some people thought it was.
