Windows 8 release date announced - October 28th

We don't usually mention software on GameArena, but given how integrated gaming is supposed to be into the Windows experience from now on, it seems important to note that Windows 8 will be hitting the shelves on October 26. The new operating system comes in four different flavours - customers can purchase either Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro, with Windows RT being built for ARM based devices (like tablets and phones) and Windows Enterprise being available through volume licensing.

If you've bought a computer running Windows 7 since June 2nd, you'll be able to get a copy of Windows 8 Pro for a pittance through Microsoft's Windows 8 Upgrade Offer. The price of Windows 8 and Pro for those of us without new computers will still be incredibly cheap compared to how much we've had to fork out for the Operating System in the past, with Microsoft detailing the various methods on the Windows blog.

One thing to note though - upgrading instead of getting a full copy and installing fresh might seem like a better option given its price, but it adds a lot of hassle if you ever need to reinstall - you'll have to install Windows 7 (or Vista or XP) and then upgrade to Windows 8.

The standard version of the Surface - Microsoft's sleek new tablet - is set to launch at the same time as Windows 8, with the beefier version launching three months later. While history tells us Windows 8 will launch worldwide on the same date however, Surface is likely to only hit the US in October, coming to Australia at some point in the future.

Are you looking forward to Windows 8? It's weird to look forward to software, but I kind of am. It's like a new toy, I can puzzle out its secrets and make it look all fancy. I haven't had much time to play about with the Release Preview yet, how about you? Answer my questions in the comments! Do it now!

I'm using Windows 8 Release Preview and it has some features which are really great but most importantly I'm finding file transfers to be greatly improved. Windows 8 as a whole runs faster than Windows 7.

Metro isn't as bad as people make it out to be. I still would have preferred the standard Start bar. I've gotten used to Metro and it it's okay (sometimes I even think it is better). The most annoying thing is how it is annoying to kill Metro.

For example if you watch a movie so far the only way I've figured out to close the movie is alt + F4. The easy work around is simply not to use Windows to play the file though.

My major concern at the moment is that nVidia's drivers aren't as good for Windows 8 yet at least in terms of SLI.

Windows 8 is pretty touch screen centric but it's got some pretty cool features lined up. The task manager is updated so you can choose which programs to run on startup, and better identify resource heavy programs.

The windows reset and restore features seem pretty neat too, restore reinstalls windows in a few clicks and takes about 8 minutes I think. the reset is a complete wipe, so i'm hoping that isn't as easy to perform as the reset otherwise i'd be worried about kents wiping my pc for ***** and giggles.

boot times are supposedly faster too, I think the gist is that they save the system and memory states to a file, and then restore it when you restart the pc. the article i read stated that boot times were improved by 70%.

Still undecided if i'm gonna get it or not, might wind up getting it when I upgrade my PC altogether at the end of the year.

I really like the clean look of Metro, although I've always had icons hidden on my desktop so I'm not sure how I'll get used to not having a choice. I'd heard about the changes to the task manager - it's about time they did something better with it, maybe I can stop using Process Hacker.

Have you guys had any program compatibility issues? It weirds me out when I see companies announcing a Windows 8 build of their software - maybe it's just that Twitter makes noticing it easier, but it never seemed like a big deal until now. I mean, obviously compatibility has been an issue before, especially with the MS-DOS and structural changes in Vista, but still.

I hate the crap out of Metro. It's a deal breaker for me. And since there doesn't seem to be any reason to use Windows 8 over Windows 7, end of sentence here.

I've used Windows 8 around at the start of the year before being forced to go back to Windows 7 because of AMD's lack of effort. I was surprised at the clean, surprising and fast interface throughout the system.

Windows 8 will be awesome. I'm definitely getting the tablet, but the more beefy version later on. And you can swtich between metro and the start bar interface on that tablet so I've read. Should be awesome.
