R18+ Passes Senate!

In some outstanding news last night, the R18+ legislation passed through the Senate without amendment. It is now in the hands of the the states and territories, expected to pass their own complementary legislation by January 1st next 2013. The announcement was made by Jason Clare, the Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Justice, who said in a statement:

The R18+ category will inform consumers, parents and retailers about which games are not suitable for minors to play, and will prevent minors from purchasing unsuitable material. The reforms also mean that adults are able to choose what games they play within the bounds of the law."

You can read the full statement by the Minister here.

The path is not clear for everyone of course - South Australia's Attorney-General has some odd ideas about classification which will no doubt provide a fair deal of facepalming over the coming months. And the odds of a company attempting to re-classify a currently refused game are incredibly slim - so don't expect to see Mortal Kombat or Syndicate hitting our shelves at any point next year. Nevertheless, celebrations are in order - so let's smoke, get drunk and look at naked ladies and dudes to show the government just how Adult we can be!

(GameArena advocates drinking responsibly. Cigarettes are harmful to your health. Looking at naked ladies and dudes can give you the vapours and cause befuddlement.)

I'm glad to hear this. Meanwhile, as a member of the SA community, I'd like to remind the SA AG that he has an obligation not to be an "utter douche". Just make'em like movies, TV shows and books, mate.

I'm over 18 and couldn't give a **** whether all MA15+ games are considered R18 in SA or not. This is a huge step in the right direction in any case, I'm not about to start arguing semantics - that sort of thing is why nothing like this happens in the first place.

it's a slow process and the politics involved makes representatives do things that don't make any sense (such a fake and machiavellian profession!). But it will certainly get there eventually.

Look, I'm sure we're all over 18 here... But what about people who aren't? Are the kids going to have to play Barbies Dino Adventure In Spelling until they are 18?

My ability to play Bonestorm without flowers and rainbows for the next 30 years is more important than 15-17 year olds being able to play anything other than Barbie games for 3 years.

As much as i love a good violent game like resident evil 5 or dead space 2, some of the things appearing in games and films these days are well and truly 'excessive'. Regardless of being an adult, playing a game that involves simulating a violent rape or of a similar theme is beyond acceptable. It's amazing such things have been tolerated from the film industry for so long.

The ratings and classification office has a purpose. Some things are simply NOT acceptable in western society.
Don't get me wrong im glad we have a R18+ rating. It places a lot of material into an appropriate category. However I also believe penalties for retailers and parents who circumvent these rules should have been increased.
