The Real Texas released
Are you looking for something to do this weekend? Well look no further friends, because the indie game The Real Texas has been released! What is The Real Texas? A self-styled mashup of Zelda: Link to the Past and Ultima VI, it puts you in the shoes of a young man who goes on a holiday to England, only to end up in the midst of a ridiculous adventure.
But let's back up a bit - a mashup of Zelda and Ultima VI doesn't really tell you much. The Real Texas has action-rpg style gameplay - exploring the world, killing enemies and solving area puzzles, but it also has an advanced RPG feel to the game - There are hundreds of items throughout the world, which you can interact with via presented options like 'Look' or 'Take' but the game also has a keyword system - so you can type in words yourself like 'Search' or 'Kick' for possible secrets. You also talk to the residents of Strange, Texas in this fashion. Selecting the 'Job' option while talking to the Innkeeper will have him describe his job - typing in 'Luda' makes him furious and he won't talk to you any longer. The Real Texas does not have stats like attack, defense or hit points, so combat focuses more on learning enemy movements and strategising around them. A strong focus was put into making the boss encounters particularly unique, with each working differently to the others. I haven't yet quite figured out how damage works for the player, but it fits together nicely with the combat system. Most importantly however, The Real Texas has a great sense of humour throughout - even the EULA finishes off with a poem about robots. The graphics might not be to everyone's taste, but they grow on you very quickly. If you've got $8.00 and some spare time, go and grab it - we need more games like this.
