Baldur's Gate Enhanced Editions announced!

In what is possibly the best news I could have possibly gotten this morning, Atari, Wizards of the Coast, and Overhaul Games announce that work has begun on the Enhanced Editions of Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2 - including the Tales of the Sword Coast and Throne of Bhaal expansions. I normally try to refrain from all caps, but HECK YES.

The Enhanced Editions are being assembled by a team at Overhaul Games - including developers who worked on the game originally. Better still, they will have a new and improved version of the Infinity Engine with modern improvements. Which means some enterprising young people could make an Enhanced PlaneScape: Torment - if an official version isn't already in the works. Oh man, I hope it is. Information is pretty scarce all over at the moment unfortunately, but we'll be sure to update you when we know more. Regardless, I can't wait to hate Imoen in glorious HD - how about you?

Baldurs Gate 2 is one of my all time favourite games, and one that doesnt need a freakin HD remake or any kind of remake. It is fine the way it is. I bet they totally ruin it

Yes yes and YES!

Hopefully it's more or less a direct rebuild just with bug fixes/updated graphics. Perhaps some new content as well but NO GAMEPLAY CHANGES!

Well yes it's hard not to be dubious. But I think if they manage to achieve what is the equivalent of BG1 with Tutu and the widescreen mod for both, maybe include some of the quests that originally got cut for time, this could be worth it for people who never got into it originally, lost their copies or only bought from GOG which was pretty cheap to begin with.

Speaking of which, if this is a full price release then forget it.

Get me a HD Remake of Planescape Torment that I don't have to spend 15 years modding and I'll buy it day one.

If I was a decent journalist, I probably would have mentioned that Overhaul Games are the guys responsible for the MDK 2 HD remake, which was pretty much exactly MDK 2, but updated for modern times. I don't think we'll be looking at Mass Effect 3 in Forgotten Realms, just BG1 and 2 in 1920x1080.

OMG OMG OMG this is great!

Baldur's Gate 1 is okay, it's probably shown its age a bit too much and it's a bit too low level. But BG2 will be absolutely amazing, can't wait to get it! My favourite game of all time is BG2.

Although, with the amount of Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 mods out there (see Big World Project), are they really going to make it much better than you already can by getting mods?

If Wizards of the Coast have given this the go-ahead, it's likely to be redone with the upcoming 5th Edition D&D ruleset to promote that, rather than the 2nd Edition rules like the original BG games.

Sorry guys, somebody had to ruin your party.

It's going to need to be more than just increased res; we already have that with the widescreen mod. Unless this package is going for $20 or less, they'll NEED to have some decent, real additions/enhancements to justify the price vs GOG.com. And if Atari plan to add DRM to the games for the first time in the series' history, the price:new feature ratio will have to be significant indeed.
