Wait PSN costs now? That cancel's out all reason to buy a Ps3 for myself.

That was actually the one reason I was thinking of getting one, because it was free to play online. I never played any xbox live on my 360, no way was I gonna pay to play online for a game I already payed for.

See this is why I only game on PC now. Consoles are charging for everything now (assuming PSN costs to use now).

PSN/online multiplayer is free and will remain that way. The PSN+ service is an additional premium service.

For $69 year you get early access to betas (Uncharted 3 MP for instance), demos and some free trails of full price games.

You also get FREE games each month to download and keep so long as your PSN+ account stays active. This usually consists of a PS3 PSN game, a PS1 classic and a couple of mini's, however occassionally it also includes a full price PS3 game, Burnout Paradise was free to all PSN+ subscribers last month.

I belive they also give you 'cloud' game saving as part of the package.

PSN+ is NOT essential to play online games, its just a premium game subscription service, and its pretty decent value..

Do I get free Gucci Wallets when I subscribe to PSN+?

Well, the lag is incredible. Even playing against Aussies I am constantly up against 5+ seconds of the game freezing, usually when I'm firing at someone. I think I've spent more time respawning than playing. I know it's a beta and all, but how can something be so much worse than the base they had to work from? U2 multiplayer barely gave me any issues at all.
