*Updated!* TF2 goes Free to Play as does ArmA 2!
Cast your minds back - way back to three days ago when Joaby reported on Valve bringing out Free to Play titles. He guessed DOTA 2 would be Valve's move into the F2P market, but in a move spectators (me) are saying might have been done just to spite him, Valve today announced that their runaway success - Team Fortress 2 - would be Free for everyone to play from now on.
Naturally of course, your more unique hats and whistledogs or whatever you can get in the game these days will still cost money - which will be paid for using micro-transactions through the 'Steam Wallet' - Valve's very own method of forcing you to choose between constantly giving them money or giving them money for free, by insisting you add a minimum of $5 to your account and then charging you odd amounts for purchases. In an interview with develop Valve's Robin Walker was keen to emphasise the point that nothing was going to change about Team Fortress 2: We're not doing any kind of subscription, nor are we taking any features away Which is good news for fans of the game no doubt. The rest of us however, are understandably more apathetic. How do you feel about this move to F2P? I expect a lot of veterans will be thrilled to have the opportunity to wipe out the mass influx of poor saps jumping in to check the game out, but at the same time those saps can be pretty annoying. Update: Originally I held off until now to post this news because I wanted to confirm what I'd heard about ArmA 2 going Free (well, more shareware) were real. Then when I confirmed it, I started writing and completely forgot all about ArmA 2. Then when I remembered seconds after posting, I wanted to add the files to the download library, which is taking longer than I expected. Yes, I'm an idiot. Moving on. ArmA 2, the military combat sim by the original developers of Operation Flashpoint has assumed a pseudo-free model similar to the shareware titles of old. ArmA 2 Free (abbreviated to A2F by Bohemia Interactive) features the multiplayer military sim you would expect it to, as well as mission editing, vehicles and awkward keyboard mapping from the full game. A2F members will not have access to the campaign modes however, nor user mods or the various addons which have come out. They will also be stuck without access to the High Resolution graphics partly responsible for making ArmA 2 the resource glutton it is. Nevertheless, if you've ever wanted to check out ArmA 2 but never had the opportunity, now is the best time to give it a shot. The details are available on the official website - as are links to download mirrors, including a torrent. I am working to get the setup files available on the GameArena servers for unmetered downloading and I'll update the post when I do.
