Alarm bells are ringing in more paranoid heads as another Sony executive has discussed the ongoing need for the PlayStation Network to, well, make cash.

This time around it's Sony Computer Entertainment's Masayuki Chatani, who heads up the technology platform division. He told Japanese outlet Nikkei the company isn't relying on "sell and forget" model.

Servers and the like have running costs. After we sell the hardware, though, we continue to sell products such as content and services

...

We expect to see considerable growth in digital content, such as game download services, avatar items and the like.

Pretty innocuous stuff, until Chatani started talking about how you could pay for it:

We can also accept payment in a growing number of ways. In addition to single-payment packaged software, there are also schemes like monthly fees or per-item charges. I think this variety of payment methods will bring about a diverse range of playing methods, too.

Monthly fees? Sony is just publicly throwing around ideas at present - possibly to soften people up and/or test the waters. The increasing vibe is a "premium" service will end up being made available for a subscription sooner or later. Just don't expect it to be called "PSN Gold".

PS3 owners shouldn't panic: SCE boss Kaz Hirai has already clarified once that the core PSN functionality - no charge to play games online - remains, the current semi-public brainstorming is for the extra stuff.

We are wondering where Home fits into all this brave new financial world, though.

I doubt anyone in their right mind would pay to play Home.

Never underestimate the stupidity of your fellow man. Turns out loads and loads of people pay good money for items in home. Home itself has actually made a profit for Sony. Although I agree that not many people would pay to use the service outright.

I should start selling my PS3. Not going to pay online seriously.

You did read the whole article didn't you? Because they have confirmed there will still be no fee to play games online.

xDM - pretty much what ^ Davros said. Sony knows one of their big differentiators from the competition is free online play - the stuff they're waving about is strictly value-added stuff.

The way its currently being (very vaguely) debated would potentially be a subscription for little extra bits and pieces - avatars, first run demos, themes, music, tv and film - god knows Sony has their fingers in enough entertainment pies to make a "Sony Subscription"deployed across PSN a pretty decent proposition.

Since they clarified "no charge to play games online - remains" then I dont really mind what else they do.

Home is already a successful cash cow for Sony. It's safe just the way it is.

Considering Microsoft makes quite a lot of revenue from Avatar clothing pieces (why would you pay for this crap), it would probably be in Sony's best interest to model some sort of feature on that.

Essentially money for very crappy pieces of coding. I'd do that anyday.

If they start making console owners pay for more stuff, maybe we'll see an influx of people back to PC's

All... I think we are underestimating two things here after reading the above posts. 1. people selling their PS3 if they have to pay for online --> the PS3 in many many households are used as Blue Ray players and as media hubs.. certainly my three PS3s are all used in this way. The PS3 has so many features other than game playing you would be mad to sell it if playing online games became an issue 2. we are underestimating how much value we get out of playing online games. I play every night just about and would happily pay a reasonable amount to continue to do this. Luckily... Sony as saying they won't charge for online gaming but if they were to... I suspect only a handful of people would stop paying online to avoid the fee.

I think it could work if they simplify digital distribution. I can see that working for them really well.

I wouldn't think so. Console gamers prefer consoles PC gamers prefer PC's, this wont change regardless of what you have to pay for.
