Persistent world based shooter game CrimeCraft was refused classification by the Classification Board late last week, meaning Vogster Entertainments game will not be released in Australia.

According to the classification board report the game "contains the option to manufacture, trade and self-administer legal 'medicines' and illegal 'boosts', which are made up of various elements and sold 'on the streets'. Boosts are sometimes referred to as 'drugs' both in the game and in the Applicant's submissions to the Board."

Essentially the title allows players to use drugs to boost their performance in the game - boosts include things like 'Anabolics' which improve the player's ability to cause damage. They inject their boosts via an auto-injector device "in a depiction reminiscent of an adrenaline shot" before the text "drug effect" is displayed on screen. You can also become "Addicted" - which instead of posing a negative effect on player gives the player a "global reduction in the cooldown timer of all medicines and boosts".

The summary of the report reads "In the Board's opinion, there is insufficient delineation between the "fictional drugs" available in the game and real-world proscribed drugs.

We'll post the entire board report for you to read as soon as possible. Thanks to Sly on our forums for the heads up!

It's an MMO, how exactly does this matter? Just release it over the net.

HURF DURF so instead of calling them drugs they should call them "Good times" and rename all the "Good times" to things like "Rainbow Tweak" and "Cum Snort"?

1. It's a really really really bad game.
2. use of real world drugs in movies, tv and games has always been enough for them to not get rated (and therefore unable to be distributed).

This has been around for a long time, and is one of the most reasonable rules of censorship we have.

Looks like it is teaching responsible drug use by making people aware of addiction/dependency and how to avoid.

Aren't educational games supposed to be all the rage these days?

regardless of if it's a top seller or not, it's still yet another fail for our classification systems lack of an R18+ rating on software.

Perhaps an interesting exercise would be to see how many games have been RC (both good and bad) over the years.
Then add to that games which have been edited to slip in to our MA rating and have slumped sales wise here, or whos sales would have markedly improved had content not been removed/edited L4D2 perhaps for example?
Or GTA 4 being imported en mass.

Then make a conservative estimate of lost revenue to all associated industries and businesses in Australia &/or overseas from this lack of an R18+ rating.
Provide this number as an additional part of a case to push for an R18 rating - politicians and businesses can't resist a good 'shock value.' (pun somewhat intended heh) numbers and statistics are like crack to them.

I'd do it myself if I knew where the heck to start or how to go about it, so I'll release the idea into the wild in the hopes someone might be able to do something with it ^_^
