Could the SCII beta be behind a delayed MW2 on PC?

Blizzard has issued a deadline for World of Warcraft players to migrate their logins to Battle.net. Ho-hum you might think, especially if you don't play the game. However games site IncGamers has a theory - one we think is valid - that the deadline may also cue something big: the launch of the StarCraft II beta shortly after this deadline lifts.
However we'd like to go one step further and suggest this development may be behind the delayed PC version of Modern Warfare 2 (if it actually IS delayed, that is). First, here's the notice for any WoW slackers who aren't already on B.net: BREAKING NEWS The reason why some may believe StarCraft II's beta will follow this deadline is the common belief that it's Battle.net which is dragging the chain with SCII now, not the game itself. Indeed, in our first hands-on session with the game parts of the presentation were amended because Battle.net wasn't up to the team's satisfaction. A ready-for-initial-inspection Battle.net therefore means Blizzard could commence the estimated six month beta period for StarCraft II and therefore avoid pushing the game's release into the same half-year as the WoW Cataclysm expansion. So: let's play the idle speculator and operate on the (hope?) that StarCraft II's beta will surface mid-November. Suddenly, you've taken a whole whack of PC gamers out of circulation as they get their hands on the shiny new beta. Not the environment you want to release your biggest PC gun of the year - Modern Warfare 2 - into. So perhaps - now really stretching the speculation - you decide shunting the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 back a couple of weeks on PC will give time for the initial frenzy over StarCraft II's beta to subside, and the less devoted PC gamers to warm up their wallet for MW2.We'd suggest it makes corporate sense to release SCII's beta into a market (initially) uncluttered by MW2 Pure speculation of course. For all we know Activision could release Modern Warfare 2 on PC at the same time as console, and the StarCraft II beta could go off in December. StarCraft II beta imminent? [IncGamers]

Posted: Wed 14 Oct 09, 8:23am You don't think a beta of probably the most anticipated RTS game of all time is likely to distract potential PC buyers of Modern Warfare 2?
It doesn't have to be "most" (your word, not mine) - just enough to make a dent. Publishers like to pull out day one/week one sales of their big franchise titles as indicators of success. Anything which impacts on their ability to say "look how much we've grown - up X% from last game" is considered a risk factor.

Posted: Wed 14 Oct 09, 10:27am The other thing to consider is this - the kind of people who are going to buy MW2 on the PC (not on the 360 or PS3) are the absolutely the kind of people who would want in on the SC2 beta.

If mw2 is anything like mw1 sp, i wont be picking it up. You can actually beat the game by shooting near no one and passing a checkpoint.

Posted: Wed 14 Oct 09, 11:49am I never got what was so great about Starcraft, I liked the game and all, I just never thought it deserved its acclaim.
I suppose that having Total Annihilation as my first RTS kinda killed Starcrafts chances.

Modern Warfare... the most highly acclaimed multiplayer shooter of recent years. Starcraft, the most acclaimed multiplayer RTS of all time.... Genres the PC is known for... FPS and RTS... Can you not see this connection?

Posted: Wed 14 Oct 09, 8:05pm i doubt they would be affraid of a dodgy beta thats only available to those that are looking for it.... id go with the assumption that they want us to buy it for our xbox360 (for those of us that have one) and then get it for PC too for the competitve multiplayer--- double $$ -- its total B.S but it probably worked for them somewhere along the line when they crunched the numbers

It just seems an odd justification to change this late in the schedule (assuming they *have* - still no confirmation).

Posted: Thu 15 Oct 09, 2:13pm It's not like every pc gamer will be playing the beta... I mean, you have to sign up for it and Blizzard decides on who will be given the beta access [which is definitely not a large number].
