Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software is a pretty rare individual in the games industry. He's a biz guy who stays put. Then again, that might be because Hollenshead owns a chunk of the company (the other co-owners: tech guru John Carmack, artist Kevin Cloud, designer Tim Willits). The big H may defer to Carmack when it comes to talking about the ins and outs of coding and game design, but he's a pretty direct and entertaining customer himself.

One of the chaps at GameSpot got a chance to grill Hollenshead on a variety of id-related topics. Apart from a pretty honest opinion on Wii development that everyone seems to be all excited about (namely: the observation that the value proposition for id developing on Wii isn't there yet), the question that caused the most dancing was a fairly innocuous one: whether id are a PC developer "first and foremost":

Well, actually it's been a fundamental, sort of philosophical shift at the company, is that we really have transitioned from, first and foremost, a PC developer to a multiplatform developer. And so when John [Carmack] developed id Tech 5 (see below), it really was targeted from the initiation as a multiplatform technology solution.

Now, there's no question that our roots are in PC gaming. And when I play a first-person shooter, keyboard and mouse is the configuration that I want to play on. I'm devoting my gaming time right now on the PC to Quake Live. I like a little Rock Band on the console, to be honest about it. But we feel like, in terms of your triple-A, big-budget, big-market title, that you really have to be cross-platform to be successful, unless you're a first party.

So as an independent developer, we feel like we have to be on all the relevant platforms. So we don't really view ourselves as PC first. I think I would say that John says that probably the primary development platform for Rage is actually the 360.

Rage is the post-apocalytpic racing/"action RPG" id are developing for EA at present. It represents the bulk of id's efforts - their big Doom 4 project is still in its embryonic stages, with Hollenshead saying they still are filling out the team.

Dubbing Xbox 360 as the main development platform for the current big game is pretty interesting however, especially if John Carmack is the guy making the call. Oldbies may remember Carmack kept 3D graphics options alive with his support of the OpenGL platform in the middle of Microsoft ramming DirectX down people's throats a decade or so ago.

The level of ambiguity in that statement is unnerving.

Also what are you up to posting news articles so early in the morning? :P

It's interesting... I didn't want to (overly) read too much into the fact that Todd H specifically said it was Carmack's view; most of the time he just says "we" (as in id).

It's probably been a point of contention internally there, just how much they should be *perceived* to be catering to consoles. Carmack seems to go wherever the technology is most appealing to him, which doesn't always seem to coincide with where the $ may be.

(...or it could be just that the Xbox 360 is the most storage challenged platform (something they've vented about before)...so it makes sense not to have to spend forever reverse engineering a stack of data backwards.)

As for me, I'm cheating: I'm in LA, bahah.

So long as it works fine on both systems and the PC version isn't a crappy afterthought of a port, I don't mind. And given that it's from id I don't see why they'd make a crap port.

There's nothing wrong with multi-platform games or engines provided they actually work properly on all platforms. Case in point is the abysmal GTA IV PC port for an example of something that sucks.

Considering the quality of their recent efforts, I'd say they have shifted from first and foremost, a company that produces good games, into one that produces dumbed down console trash that sucks arse.

The sad thing is that id was a big part of PC gaming's development. But considering id lately, and pretty much every game dev's attitudes lately, can't say I'm surprised consoles are a big thing now. Because $$$ means more over quality.

as long as they keep the low ress textures in the consoles and give high ress textures/high quality options to PC i have no problem with this, this also includes poor console -> PC Ports as well.

lack of memory/gpu raw power on consoles mean they have to use lower ress textures, lack off aa / af is also there, small maps longer loading times on consoles, server browser is a joke on almost all games, pirated games can be played online. rts games are a joke on consoles.

as a consume who has no basic understanding of a pc, the console is more attractive, hence why they are pretty much in all homes, so as a developer u want to be targeting those, the pc is superior in every way to a console, but without some basic knowledge or taking time to do some research before buying a pc, most people have no idea..but u say xbox360..or ps3..u know exactly what ure getting.

its upto people like amd/intel/nvidia/ati and MS to make it easier for the consumer.

if i was a developer and i want to make a new game right now, i would be thinking console first, then pc as a after thought, its sad but thats how it is, and i would just like to add that pc's are quiet cheap now to build, but if u don't know what ure looking for, expect retailers to rip u off with there 'gaming rigs' with the low end hardware or like dell with there high end machines with extreme prices that is really outrageous..

amd/intel/nvidia/ati can fix most of this issues by release there hardware in a more friendly format. Not 5-6 variations of the same hardware which confuses the customer, nvidia recently rebranded there gf9 series into gt 200 series naming scheme..., and ms can release one OS or 2, business/home.

at the end of the day, when it comes to a PC there is more to it , when it comes to a console, there is not much to it, u plug it, put disc u play.
