It's not. Halo fans can rejoice today with the announcement at the Tokyo Games Show that a new Halo 3 game would be released in 2009. Update - Microsoft has been in touch to let us know Halo 3 Recon will be a standalone expansion pack for Halo 3.

Halo 3 Recon, a prologue to the events which occurred in Halo 3, will hit Xbox 360s in Spring 2009 and feature a UNSC marine as the main character it has been revealed during the Microsoft keynote at TGS 08.

Bungie has also released a new trailer for the Halo 3 expansion pack, which we'll have up for your viewing soon. For now, let's all reminisce back to when Bungie said,

Bungie announces Halo 3, the third and final game in the Halo Trilogy. Halo 3 will be released for Microsoft's Xbox 360 in 2007...

Nobody saw it coming. Halo 3! Who knew? For the last year or two, people have speculated about what our next project was and surprisingly, in all that time, not a single person guessed that it would be Halo 3. Not one .

We declare it the best kept secret ever .

From the Bungie blog, no less. We're willing to wager that Halo 3 Recon was probably a better kept secret, Bungie. That's some talented misdirection though, we'll pay that.

I'd definitely recommend reading
http://blog.ascendantjustice.com/keep-it-clean/
- it offers a heap of info on the Keep it Clean trailer... in particular the part about exactly sixteen pods. Interesting.

Anyway, woohoo more Halo is always a good thing!

Is this going to be DLC, or actually a real game

I'd vote it being on another disc perhaps like those maps back on Halo 2... I hope so at least because if its a large amount of data I'm going to be screwed downloading that from XBL. 3 gigs per month ftl.

EDIT: Probly available from XBL too though like everything else.

If the game's comming out fall 2009 it probably would be a real game and not an expansion

Downloading the trailer now. Halo 3 was good, just not as damn epic as it was made out to be.

c'mon bassius, single player was junk and multiplayer has the worst matching just giving you lag city games regardless

There are plenty of games out there that would qualify as "junk" but I don't think Halo 3 is one of them. As Purple Monkey said, it wasn't as epic as it was made out to be but it was certainly very solid. Cool weapons, cool vehicles, plenty of action and crap story, something that befalls even the best games.
And yeah multiplayer can be a complete lagfest at times, although I think the matchmaking is fine, but I still enjoy it through all the frustration so it must be doing something right...

Halo 3 is the final game in the Halo Trilogy. Return of the Jedi was the final movie of the Star Wars Trilogy too. Here come the Halo spin offs! Microsoft can't let go of a universe/cash cow. Spin offs, like Halo Wars, Halo 3: Recon, Peter Jackson's Halo Project and the Master Chief on Shield World Game/Movie.

They said it better,

Halo 3 lag can be annihilated by having aussie friends and playing during peak hour with 'good connection' on. Playing by yourself at 2am in unpopular playlists might be your problemo there.

Halo 3 is only good because of the cult following it for from the first game, which it got because there was nothing else like it on consoles at the time.

I mean hell, the only thing Halo does better then Crysis is the story, and yet Crysis gets ripped to pieces while Halo is praised? please.
