Warhammer: can EA pull it off? pc

Young Joab and I had a discussion this morning around the question: are people burning out on EA-related news? It’s a reasonable point to discuss. After all, they’ve been everywhere since John Riccitiello took over the top spot. In the corporate sphere, when EA aren’t punching on with Activision/Vivendi, they’re (still) trying to take over Take-Two. In the market space, they’re still pushing on with rolling out a casual offering alongside a hardcore one, not to mention trying to keep bridging the gap between sports and sports gaming.

So to be fair, if you don’t talk about what the one-time leader is up to… you might miss something big. So forging on with that loose justification is a question doubtless plaguing the minds of many punters who either are active (or interested) in massively multiplayer online gaming (MMOGs): how will EA go with Warhammer Online, out relatively shortly?

At first glance, things don’t look promising. EA has built up quite a rep for putting stuff out annually, of maximising dollar return, and not wasting too much time on maintaining a product after launch. Great news if you’re a stockholder, not so great if you’re looking for a game to play for more than six months, let alone the years that MMOG players expect. After all, who wants to invest time and a monthly subscription in something that’s got an uncertain future. The impression of longevity – illusory or otherwise – is key in MMOG worlds.

Developers Mythic are passionately behind the project, but that too is no guarantee. If the money dries up or isn’t meeting expectations, then all bets are off. Just ask Flagship Studios, makers of Hellgate: London. Touted as the next big thing at launch, the game has lurched along haphazardly and recently the developers had to bring in external cash from a partner to keep things afloat.

Further, there’s no shortage of uncertainty about how EA will monetise the Warhammer game. Expansion packs are one thing, but dipping into the world of microtransactions is dodgy territory. Oblivion’s experiment with paid-for items didn’t change the world – aggressive pursuit from EA or Mythic early on isn’t likely to help. You’d think if the subscriber numbers pour in in sufficient numbers, the need to add additional revenue might be reduced.

My hope is the same as many people’s: that EA buck history and take the long view when it comes to supporting Warhammer Online. Maybe all that aggro between them and Activision might manifest itself in a determination to bury World of Warcraft, who knows. The old EA would have likely turfed the game out the door, kept it afloat for 3 months and promptly forgot about it. Unfortunately for us, the chicken-or-the-egg nature of MMOG play at present means we’ll have to buy the game and play through the content for a few months to find out if the new EA follows through or not – here’s hoping.

What’s your thoughts? Can EA be trusted to deliver a MMOG - and support it? Will the fact it’s a big licensed name make a difference? When evaluating a MMO – what’s your idea of a reasonable period of time supporting it

I'd be more inclined to say "Can Mythic still pull it off with EA ******* things up constantly".

From all the impressions I've gathered over following the game for the last 2 years is that they are given quite a long leash by EA. This has allowed them to delay the game 3 times and pursue there design decisions without the whip coming down.

I think also that it would completely ludicris for EA not to have a profound respect for the MMO market. It is entirely in the realm of possibility for WAR to have a subscriber base to put it on the map next to WoW in terms of market share. The figures that this could generate are nothing to be sneezed at.

MMO's are of course a long term investment and risky but if designed and executed properly are a huge cash cow that only gets fatter.

I hope Mythic can make WAR great, their previous game Dark Age of Camelot was my first, and definitely the best mmorpg ever, until they stuffed it up with a crappy expansion

i think its because gamesworkshop has ultimate control over the game and EA doesnt want to piss them off.

I think you'll find with the large loss over several years, its very likely EA will buy out Gamesworkshop simply for the value of it's IP and known audience. GW is hemmoraging money through knucklehead deals like holding onto the lord of the rings miniatures game (licensing fees) even though the hobbit hasn't been made yet. EA is selling games, and games workshop isn't. I think the worst thing about this is that companies like EA have not learned through negative customer reaction that what they do is both unpopular and unprofitable. We keep buying the crap they print. They've even gotten to the point where they think it's reasonable to sell weapons and maps in games. It's a good idea if you're a stockholder or gamestore owner, but unacceptable to gamers. Even companies like Steam are starting to lose their reputation as "good guys" through their distribution fees and the fact that they can't provide international pricing that don't annoy local vendors. They either sell cheap international priced games on steam and annoy the companies they sell distribution rights to, or they alienate gamers while they keep nice with Kmart.

I don't trust EA to provide a decent game on release or after months, le alone an MMO after years. Their track history is not good and it doesn't matter how often they publicise that they are turning things around - games are still rushed, patches are still few and far between (if any) and 6-12 month old games are still treated like your grandfather in a nursing home. and as long as people keep shelling out for the latest greatest thing, ea will rule forever.

if they bring back dungeon keeper 3 i will review my comments post release...

It will be fine because EA have very little creative control over it, thank god for that.

From what I've read Mythic is in charge of the game. EA is just supplying the money and taking a cut of the profits.

I know that EA will have some say about the game just because they pay the bills but most likely that will be restricted to the logistics and the server side of things.

I can't see it being worse then the launch of WoW with ques and crashes and the still weekly maintenance.

Plus there is an Australian Server, so they are listening at least.

Answer to original post - NO

I play WoW and thoroughly enjoy it but still keep an eye out for the next great game. Been watching comments on AoC but to be fair it's early days and not many comments around compared to the launch of WoW. Once the game is fully launched that may change.

WAR well I only know what I've read here on GA and basically if EA are involved then I wont be wasting my time or money on the game. With EA's cash grabbing history I have little faith that they will not do it again. To be honest I don't understand why people still buy their games but thats just me. So I'll vote with my money and see how AoC goes or just wait for the WoW expansion.

lol @ the people that hold a grudge against EA, they've already bought out both Pandemic and Bioware, then with the possibility of them getting Take Two who own, what, 2K Games and Rockstar, you're going to be missing out on a lot of decent games if you still refuse to purchase anything EA is involved in.

I have full faith in WAR, ive been following it for ages and i really think its the one game that has the potential to steal away A LOT of WoW players.

Because, despite how cool it is to bag out EA on the internet, they are responsible for some really good games. And the changes they've undergone recently will peobably mean even more great games.

I personally can't wait for WAR.

Which means as soon as they cut funding support disappears, let alone content released as they go along.

Wait, what? You mean the changes they keep promoting they've undergone? Or some actual changes?

I'm yet to witness one EA-acquisitioned IP that is still decent today.

haha just hope EA dont do what they do for many of their games with online multiplayer - after 18 months yank the servers.
"Sequel is out, forget about that game now just buy this one"
They are a typical sh**house public company - they only care about a profit and keeping their share price up.
Idiots

They had better get it right. I've been playing Warhammer on the table top for 20 years, read all the novels etc etc. I really pray that they actually get the balance right. A WAR product failure may spill over and impact the GW brand. On the other had as Rapax said a title success could see EA swallow GW which may also impact the IP. ( GW has revenue of about 150 million p.a). Overall I am excited about the WAR game, and the beta RvR, looks solid with some great new game mechanics.

After getting pwnt by EA with CnC 3 and the Kane's Wrath fiasco, I'm loathe to anticipate any EA game.

However, I'm still waiting for Warhammer with hope, the fact there will be an Aussie server just cements it even more.

I think EA are being fairly hands off with this release....
