Microsoft has dropped the price of their Xbox 360 Core pack to an Australian RRP of $399.95 putting the console in direct competition with Nintendo's Wii in the build up to this holiday season.
For those looking for the ultimate value and the freedom to customise their console as they see fit, the Xbox 360 Core console is now priced at $399.95 RRP. The Xbox 360 Core console provides everything needed to hit the ground running while giving consumers the ability to add new features and accessories when they want.
They've also dropped the price of the Pro pack to make it more affordable, and with Halo 3 only one month away from release (along with a list of other stellar games such as BioShock, Call of Duty 4 and more), now has never been a better time to start looking to picking up a 360.
Microsoft is enhancing the value of its entire family of Xbox 360 consoles. At the new recommended retail price of $579.95, the Xbox 360 Pro system offers a rich online-ready gaming experience right out of the box with a 20GB hard drive, wireless controller, Xbox 360 media remote, and more.
There is no word on whether or not any of the add-ons for the console will also go through a similar reduction in price, but with Sony's machine still floating around the thousand dollar mark and Nintendo's release line-up looking fairly skiddish for the rest of the year, this is both a smart and aggressive move on Microsoft's part. Ladies and gentleman, methinks the console wars has truly just begun.

Awsome. Should see a much larger online base shortly then. One thing though....Wii line-up skiddish? SSB Brawl? Metroid Prime 3? Mario Galaxy?
Only my opinion but don't these title's warrant something more than skiddish? Go check out smashbros.com if your unconvinced, 20 mins listening to that Zelda Medley and watching the new E3 Trailer and you'll see what I mean. :D

That's right, buy a core now & pay through the nose for every god damn accessory that'll be needed down the road. Not to mention the games that will carry the 'storage required' sticker.

Skiddish for the rest of the year correct me if I'm wrong but all the titles you listed are due in '08?

yeah, but that's only three games versus close to 20 games of which at least 50% are must-have on 360 (though I have both consoles, so it doesn't bother me too much either way;)

core will be good once it's around $300 when mod-chips are plentiful.

whack a (by the time it's \atless then $300, should be up to 750gb as standard) HDD and mod-chip in for another $200 ish. Bob = uncle.

what i think is great was david mcclean did an interview and he stated that they are not going against the wii with there core bundle. but over the last few months the sale of core bundles over the pros went up.

Well of course they will when the ones that come with the hdd get the three red lights and become an expensive door stop. that was the funniest thing i read today

lol, The wii has already sold enough units to be beyond dreamcasting stage, and the PS3 will get there eventually. As much as I hate the PS3 it does have a loyal fanbase and it is pretty much the console that every casual gamer swears by. I don't think the PS3 will outsell the PS2, but I can't see it being a complete flop.

This is awesome news though, I was keen on getting a 360 by the end of the year and this only furthers my cause. :)

The ps3's the superior gaming machine, it's just too expensive, but at the moment, the wii's winning the race. Which of the 3 companies is the only one making a profit on their next gen console? Yup, nintendo.

People may think that microsoft's sitting pretty & that sony is screwed, but those people also forget that the ps2 is still selling bucket loads. Each of those units also makes sony money.

As it stands I think xbox360 is winning hands down when it comes to games library. No doubt the ps3 and wii will pick up in the games stake as time goes on. But for now, there are just that many really good top quality game (particularly for gamers) out there on 360, and even more to come by Christmas. I'm really glad my friends all chipped in and got me one for my 21st!

Since the 360 pro pack dropped aswell may be interested in pickin one up soon. Still standing by Nintendo tho. They've re-established thier house hold name with a very large user base and now the next step is developing thier next console usen what they've learnt from the success and critisism of the wii.

While at this price is nearly enough to make me regret not keeping the money i spent on buying a wii at launch and just buying a 360, I still stand by the fact that the 360 can only offer me so much in terms of a new experience since I already own a pc capable of outpacing the 360 on all levels; and while I am a big fan of halo and project gotham (and both their sequels), the Wii offers me a new level of interaction and lets face it, Zelda: OoT was the greatest game of all time, and the chance to play Twilight Princess was nearly worth the price of admission alone... So yes, 360 has more blockbuster titles, more bells and whistles, but its essentially a Corvette- its fast and fun, but if you want something truely brilliant you go buy yourself a Aston Martin (in this metaphor the AM is the PC...), because when you get down to it a Corvette is just a ford in a pretty dress- its the kind of car you test drive but dont buy (in other words, its the kind of girl you take out to parties cause you know she puts out, but you wouldnt take home to meet your parents). The Wii on the otherhand is like a Kit Car... its classic, its fun, its unique, its relatively cheap, but you can't put a whole lot of fuel in the tank so its best for short bursts (its the girl next door but all grown up and she died her hair red... familiar with a twist... ya digg)...... hmmm too many metaphors...

Hang on the core one is without the Hard Drive right? Personally i'd grab a Hard Drive one, yes it's expensive but it's so much better for gaming, better load times better saving etc.

Woohooo looks like I can afford one now, trade in the old Xbox for the new Halo version to go with my Master Chief head.

Also i don't think that they have gone onto the 65nm process for the elite or the Halo version, as there has been no word about the shift in die shrink.

what you guys saw, was the RRP sitting at $650 and the console being sold for $540-ish... so, if the RRP is $580, imagine what the retail price will be on the Premium pack, under $500 probably, come christmas.

those intercooler things are absolutely useless, they're more inclined to harm the 360 than cool it, due to the intercooler drawing the power for its fans from the 360, hampering the fans it already has, you're better off leaving your 360 on top of a cabinet, completely clear of anything that obstructs the airflow.

or better yet, drop it in a freezing cold tank of demineralised/distilled water that would keep it cool....and wet

the only reason they dropped the price of the 360 is because sony dropped the price of the ps3 in the us and plans to drop the price in europe and aus soon so they are just trying to get in first

FYI: The "Pro" consoles at EB, WOW, etc for $499 are factory refurbishments - ie: warranty returns. This must be stated both in their advertising, and when you buy the machine. Be sure to ask what you're getting and if there's any extra conditions on the warranty, etc. Factory refurbs should still have the same warranty as a new one though.

Microsoft recently announced that they're budgeting more than a billion US$ to fix the widespread problems with the 360. Seriously. There have been many failures, and heaps of returns, and so retailers are getting very annoyed. From what I've read, the failures have mostly affected the NTSC models in the US, and the local PAL versions are a bit better... but they still do overheat and still do fail - Keep your receipt!

The price drop is welcomed, but it's still too high IMHO. US price for a 360 x exchange rate + GST = 25% less than we get charged. And that's with the price reduction.

At least it's better than Sony. PS3 = US$499 x exchange rate (84c) + GST = AU$653.45. But we get charged over a grand (>50% more). What the F#%K?

Yeah I checked out EB today and the guy told me I'd probably be better off getting a preowned Premium pack for $498. His best point was that I'd get a 12 month warranty that would mean that they could swap the system at the counter if anything happened to it, as opposed to Microsofts which involves sending it to them.

Seems pretty good to me, although I don't exactly have another $500 to spend on more video games, hehe.
