Bethesda has announced some of the talent set to voice key characters in the latest Elder Scrolls tale, Oblivion. Among the cast is Star Trek captain and voice acting veteran Patrick Stewart and Lord of the Rings and Goldeneye star, Sean Bean.
ROCKVILLE, MD, Sept. 30 -- To create the perfect tone and timbre for its award-winning role playing videogame, The Elder Scrolls(R) IV: Oblivion(TM), Bethesda Game Studios announced today an all-star voice cast of British stage and screen legends. Developed for both the Xbox 360(TM) videogame and entertainment system from Microsoft, and PC platforms, Oblivion is one of the year's most highly-anticipated games and sequel to the best-selling role playing game of 2002, Morrowind(R).

Leading the lineup is Patrick Stewart, playing the role of the Emperor. Stewart is best known among genre fans as Captain Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation and as Professor Charles Xavier from the X-Men feature films.

Providing the voice for the emperor's lost son and heir to the throne is Sean Bean. Bean skyrocketed to the public's attention as Lord Boromir in the Academy Award-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy. While Oblivion will be his first video game role, Bean is well known for starring in a variety of films, including memorable roles in National Treasure, Goldeneye, and Patriot Games.

"Oblivion is something unique, an entertainment experience unlike anything I had seen before," said Bean. "I decided this was a project I really wanted to work on creatively, and I hope fans of the game enjoy the results."

Terence Stamp will lend his talents to the game's heavy plot, a sinister force bent on the destruction of Tamriel, the game's geographical setting. Stamp starred in Star Wars: Phantom Menace as Supreme Chancellor Valorum and as General Zod in the legendary Superman films. Oblivion is Stamp's first foray into voice work for a video game.

"Having never done voice work for a video game before, I really had no notion of what to expect," said Stamp. "Bethesda did a great job in providing the theme for the character and it was fun to give life to the villain in the story who is a very thoughtful man from a line of kings who seeks to realize his own vision for the empire."

Bethesda previously announced that Lynda Carter would also lend her voice talents to the game. Best known for her starring role as the crime-fighting superhero, "Wonder Woman," in the hit television series, Carter has appeared in more than 50 television shows and films, including this summer's hits, Sky High and Dukes of Hazzard.

"We wanted to work with voice talent that really captured the emotion and drama of the game's story," said Todd Howard, executive producer for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. "Quite honestly, we wrote the parts with these individual actors in mind. It's an honor to have them lend their talents to the project."

As the next chapter in the highly acclaimed and best-selling Elder Scrolls series, Oblivion is a single-player game that takes place in Tamriel's capital province, Cyrodiil. Gamers are given the task of finding the hidden heir to a throne that sits empty, the previous emperor having been killed by an unknown assassin. With no true emperor, the gates to Oblivion (the equivalent of hell in the world of Tamriel) open, and demons begin to invade the capital and attack its people and towns. The player must find the lost heir and unravel the sinister plot that threatens to destroy all of Tamriel

Hot damn, if you havent already, check out the 20 minute video (you'll need the xvid codec to view). Or better, if you can source out the original DVD ISO, it's much better quality (albeit 1.2GB).

If anyone's seen the old E3 trailer, the emperor atop of the tower will be Stewart. Also, Stewart on that trailer is doing the voice-over, so no real news here, but nice announcement with the other three casted for the voice roles (check out the oblivion homepage for more details, i think its www.elderscrolls.com )

Im pretty sure there will be a COllectors Edition.

Bethesda normally do them with big "authentic looking" maps and other various stuff.
Should be good.

I got Morrowind with my GeForce4, and loved every minute of it.

Cannot wait for this game! am getting a new comp just for it :D

Damn I thought it was Alf Stewart and Mr Bean. OK - crap joke. I cant wait for this one. I have Daggerfall, Redguard, and Morrowind and expansions so this is pretty much a definite purchase. I just watched the video, poor Thunder lol.

It's great to see Sean Bean in a good guy role. I can't remember seeing him play anything but a villain since Sharpe.

Can't see why developers waste their cash hiring these expensive actors personally. Some unknown random guy would do the job just as good.

Actually I guess I can see why - its too 'impress' people into buying the game because so and so actor is in it...Why the hell do people even care?

It Befuddles me :P

No they wouldn't, crap voice acting can completely ruin the atmosphere in a game.

To stop being befuddled, try playing a few more games. The quality of voice acting in the vast majority of games is abysmal. In an RPG such as Oblivion where the story and atmosphere is so much more important than in an action or RTS title, first rate voice acting is critical.

Question: What made vice city such a great game?
Answer: The best voice acting in a game yet.
Question: Why was vice citys voice acting so good?
Answer: Because they used real actors whose voices suited the role.

Thats why game companies spend lots of money to hire real actors to do thier voices.

I would have liked to see Sean Connery as the emporer but Professor Xavier is almost as good.

I agree with that sentiment to a certain extent, however there are a lot of talented voice actors that work for a lot less coin than the A list celebrities.

Other than the obvious marketting reasons, I think it's also something to do with the familiarity of a respected actor's voice in a video-game. Hearing Bruce Campbell in the spider-man games, or Chris Walken in True Crime added to my enjoyment at any rate.

I just read the voices make up for half of the DVD. Pretty sweet, from the movies i've seen they've done a nice job with the voices.

Take the COD 2 demo for example, what would it have been like if they all had dull sleepy voices with American accents? The atmosphere is greatly hightened by all the British people shouting etc. And the Germans as well. Plus what about Fable? The setting was defined by the voice acting.
