Nexuiz is a new game built on the engine of the original Quake, offering fast and frantic gameplay:

Nexuiz is built on the power of the Darkplaces engine, which is a heavily modified version of the original Quake. Darkplaces features realtime lighting and stencil shadows, bumpmapping, gloss, bloom, and totally rewritten network code that supports up to 64 players on a single server. While quality gameplay was our primary goal, it's graphics technology and artwork allows the game to compete with the current quality of commercial games.

Nexuiz aims to capture the fast-paced action of the original deathmatch games, and is definitely worth a look if you rate your skills. Best of all, it has been released as a completely free game, so you can download it right here from GameArena and start playing online immediately. Here's a quick mini-review of it - we gave it a good bash for a couple of hours in the office and had a blast. We found that we got SIGNIFICANTLY better performance if we shut off some of the visual effects like shadows. The weapons are all pretty cool, but they'll take a while to figure out. The railgun-type weapon seems a bit over powered though, and the 'smaller' weapons like the machine gun seem a bit under powered - the weapon balancing could do with some work.

Its good fun to play though and worth a crack if you're looking for a new challenge!

Saw a preview for this a couple of months ago at PlantQuake. Looks good. Nice to see an old-school deathmatch game, instead of another boring WW2 or slow paced CS clone.
