Never finished a FF for that very reason. I tried to get into it, I really did, but I just couldn't do it.

I'm only an hour into it so far and I have not done much except a string of simple battles and lots of cutscenes, however, I expected no less from the initial part of the game..

Graphics are awe-inspiring though, voice work is pretty decent, although Vanille's voice is terrible.

From all reports, the first 15 or so hours are very on-rails, and from that point it really starts to open up..

Reserving judgement until I'm right into the game...

Yeah, I wrote that post after about 5 hours of play. I've susbsequently put in about another 5 and the game is getting more interesting.

Still, there is pretty much no gameplay to be had in the first few hours. I can take tutorials that last a several minutes, but I don't need to have my hand held for hours at a time. Huge mistake in the design IMO. Replaying this game will be that much harder knowing you have to grind through several hours of boredom before you get any kind of challenge.

I'm also really missing the towns, the pacing just feels wrong for an FF game.

The game is suppose to last 40-50 hrs so if you compare it proportion-wise to a quick fix adrenaline filled FPS that only last 8hrs, 2hrs seems just about right for an RPG tutorial.

2 busy playing civi & BFBC2 to bother, maybe later, though the game doesn't seem to be up to SE usual standards.

Real version or console version?

What's the difference? It's supposed to be a console franchise...

20 according to limimis review. But it's not like the game has 'TUTORIAL' flashing on the screen for those hours - the game likes to pretend the 'tutorial' portion of the game is only 1-2 hours long. It's just that the game **** sucks at that point and gets better later on, or at least that's the hope that's keeping me going...

A keyboard and mouse, 8 players, decent resolution and decent graphics.

And dedicated servers, can't forget dedicated servers.

Shorty: So rrunner is still alive. What are your thoughts on Move?

Hey Shorty,

Initial impressions were its a takeoff of the Wii, I've already got 1 so why buy a similar control scheme for the ps3.

Just heard some news though that move could be integrated into the fps genre & therefore act more like a mouse, point & shoot which could be really interesting. It'll depend on the application & whether or not it receives wide spread developer support. I won't be rushing out to buy one.

Gir: Real version or console version?

lol, "real" has varying degrees depending on how deep your pockets may be. I'm sure there are still plenty of gamers who haven't experienced Crysis on max settings because they're still waiting to upgrade their rigs.

I'm 1 of them, but for now I'm happy to enjoy the console version especially when I check out the line up on consoles due out this year.

According to the guide theres only up to chapter 10. And the only time when you can customize who you want in the battle field is at chapter 9 which pretty much be useless. The game should of been more epic like FFX.

I forgot to mention its not really my guide my mate told me about it. But yeah only chapter 11? That's pretty short for FF.

Anyway I'm after the scenes really than the game play.

What I find like... REAL annoying is how the storyline totally interferes with the gameplay. Several times I've upgraded my character only for him/her to be subbed out of the group because they went to whoop whoop land in the story. I could take that, but I couldn't take it anymore after it got to the point where certain enemies only have a specific weakness in which of course non of your characters could cast because the one character that has it, has been subbed out because of the story! ROAR!!!!!!!

Well there is something to be said for learning to cope and how best to deal with something under less than ideal circumstances. The only thing that even remotely bothered me was not having a commando for a while... but it's really all part of the tutorial.

After you get to control your party formation you're never put back into a position like that, so it really is irrelevant.

What I didn't like was near everything else.

I just took it back to Civic video after a 3 day rental. I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. Like I said up top, I have never been able to get into FF games, but this one I really enjoyed. I think I will pick it up when the price comes down a bit.

I got about 14 hrs in over that time. While I understand what you are all getting at, I didn't mind it at all. Maybe I'm a better audience for it due to my relative inexperience with the series, but I enjoyed it immensely and will pick it up soon.

Those who have a problem with the 'authentic' Final Fantasies seem to lap this **** up. If you liked the previous games it's a bit of a gamble. Overall metacritic rates this at 83, the lowest FF has been in 17 years.

Borrowed my brother copy to give it a go. 6 hours in (Finished disk one, disk 2 is in my brothers room and he's asleep). So far I'm not really impressed. Combat has the press A to win feel, with the occasional paradigm switch if your health gets low. Story is a horrible mess. Cut scenes happen for the most random of things. It feels like the developers got annoyed with the gameplay interfering with the story, so the started to cut it out.

I'll move onto disk 2 tomorrow. Hopefully it gets better.

Don't get your hopes up too much. Paradigm switching gets more intense to the point where you could be switching every few seconds for some tougher battles. Other than that, the story goes downhill after chapter 12. If you go in with low expectations, you may enjoy it

I also hate all the characters. It's as if Square decided interesting and likable characters where to cliche.

Combat for the first few hours was horrendous really put me off. Haven't watched one cut scene yet so no fkn idea whats going on. But the further I've gotten in the better the combat has gotten and more fun. And like someone mentioned above the need to paradigm shift often to either boost your characters etc is pretty awesome. Just sucks it took so long to get any depth I've still got a bad taste about it.

I'd usually watch the cut scenes but combination of my dad only wanting to see / play the fights and the dialogue feeling like a cheese grater on the side of my head has made me skip them.
