I’m surprised no one has commented on this story yet considering every time a cross platform game is released which features lower quality AA on the ps3 version it seems to get noted. Well now the devs of The Saboteur have implemented a unique solution to the problem & the result is AA that rivals 16x AA on the ps3 while the 360 version has NONE……
The PS3 rendition of Pandemic's The Saboteur is different though. It's special. It's trying something new that's never been seen before on console, or indeed PC, and its results are terrific. In a best-case scenario you get edge-smoothing that is beyond the effect of 16x multi-sampling anti-aliasing, effectively delivering an effect better than the capabilities of high-end GPUs without crippling performance. Compare and contrast with Xbox 360 hardware, which tops out at 4x MSAA.
Let's kick off with a quick comparison of the effect in play on both versions of the game. It's interesting to point out that both Xbox 360 and PC versions of The Saboteur have no support for anti-aliasing whatsoever. It's just the PS3 owners that get the love, for reasons explained later. While the lack of AA in the Xbox 360 version is a bit disappointing, for the purposes this piece it's a bit of boon as it effectively gives us a "before and after" means of better understanding the PS3 technique.

Great news, once again CELL is taking the ps3 where the competition can’t follow. 16x AA & the spus free up the gpu to do more important work, are we going to see another leap in the level of graphics & gameplay on upcoming ps3 games? Despite all the fud about the cell being more difficult to develop for its ps3 devs who are continuing to set new benchmarks for gaming & the latest would seem to be 16x AA on a console.

funny but I thought alot of buyers sitting on the fence trying to decide between both consoles might take an interest, just another example of the legs & better value the ps3 represents.

How many people out there understands what this means? How many less would go and inquire about it when shopping for a console?
Joe- Which console has better AA?
Salesman- What the hell are you talking about?
I don't even know what it means.

My defininition of next gen would be having graphics that DON'T require AA, at all!
Xbox and PC don't need the jaggies flattened out with 16 layers of the same frame? That's how I'm reading it.

lol, you're a joke. Not far back AD started a post relating to the level of AA on cross platform games & the discussion attracted 129 posts with most of you guys clapping each other on the back about how better the 360 was in terms of AA on cross platform titles.
Go full circle & we now have a cross platform title featuring 16++ AA on the PS3 version & NO AA on the 360 version & it doesn't even get a mention or tossers like you try & make the point no body cares about it, right!
Sort of highlights the fact you don't have anything intelligent to add and can't refute the point.
Shodan: Xbox and PC don't need the jaggies flattened out with 16 layers of the same frame? That's how I'm reading it.
What game are you talking about Shodan? The 360 version of Saboteur DID have jaggies & would've benefitted from AA.

I was talking about Saboteur, rrunner, but being sarcastic.
What I find more interesting is the new firmware update for the PS3. Allowing games to be played in 3d if you own the correct television. Its the same graphics driver trick Nvidia users on the PC having been using for a little while now.
I'm guessing being able to do 16x AA is part of that package.

Like I have said many times. Numbers are completely irrelevant. What I said was that the game looks better. If all this jibberish makes the game look better than awesome. How and why it looks better is completely irrelevant as far as I am concerned.
Now the funny part is that you feel it is worth starting a thread for one game that has 16xAA in there somewhere. Even funnier is that it took the PS3 with all its supposedly you beaut super awesome hardware something like 4 years to do it.
Now more importantly, the new iron man 2 trailer looks awesome.

I find it amusing that the X360 version of saboteur looks better than the PS3 version due to the PS3 version suffering from tearing and blurry textures - which no amount of AA can 'fix'.
Maybe you should have selected a different game that actually LOOKS better on the PS3 hmmm?

Off the top of my head, Burnout Paradise and Dragon Age do. There's nothing on the 360 that has come close to being as pretty as Killzone either.

You can do 16AA and higher on a PC for a long time now. But comparing PC and console AA is somewhat pointless; PCs have to work at a much higher resolution on a physically smaller screen. Going beyond 4AA has minimal improvements for picture quality.

I was talking about multi-platform games. Not exclusives. We all know that the PS3 has the edge with exclusives. Just a shame the multi-platforms out number the exclusives 20:1.

So it uses target edge blurring to simulate x16aa. Big deal. Radeon's from 2 years ago used this technique to simulate x48aa. Modern day video cards can do x16 full screen AA, not this simulated crap.

So I guess it would be awesome (your words) if Pandemic promote their technique to other 3rd party devs & we end up in a situation where ps3 ports are featuring 16++ AA & looking far better than their 360 counterparts.
4 years perhaps but I think the point worth noting is like you say after 4 years the ps3 is still setting new benchmarks 16x AA & whats more noteworthy is it’s a 3rd party developer achieving this. I don’t hear any knobs saying how difficult the ps3 is to develop for now!!!!!!! lol…..
Of course long before Saboteur we had Uncharted, Killzone2, MGS4 & Uncharted2. The writing has been on the wall for some time now. Perhaps you should be asking why this hasn’t already been done on the 360 with its extra time in the marketplace, lol.
I’ll have to checkout the iron man trailer.
AD: I find it amusing that the X360 version of saboteur looks better than the PS3 version due to the PS3 version suffering from tearing and blurry textures - which no amount of AA can 'fix'.

lol, AD is chiming in with absolute BS. The 360 version also has its share of jaggies so don’t try & pretend otherwise.
360 Version.
Graphics 7.5
The graphics are a little jaggy, and there were a few frame-rate issues but, for the most part, this is a perfectly acceptable-looking game. Workmanlike, you might say.
http://au.xbox360.ign.com/articles/105/1051051p2.html
The point to the above is quite simply that the ps3 is again setting a new benchmark in console gaming but this time its 3rd party devs innovating. What is surprising is that the same devs didn’t implement it on the 360 version, what with its superior bandwidth, more flexible UMA & “free 4x AA”, & ease of use in programming, lol, what a joke!!!
The other point to be raised is the fact the spus are flexible enough to be used to produce effects rivalling 16x AA & take further workloads off the RSX. This should come as no surprise after Guerrila showed the amount of post processing effects possible with KZ2.
16x AA achieved without taxing the gpu, try again AD!

Because the 360 has older hardware. Because it doesn't have as much grunt as the PS3 (And in turn is more affordable but anyway). Noone is arguing the fact the PS3 is more powerful. But my line of reasoning is that the 360 still looks awesome. It honestly doesn't matter if the PS3 version looks better. Tell me honestly, how much further can one go as far as graphics are concerned?
Can you look at Batman, or this saboteur on both systems simultaneously and tell me the PS3 version looks better with a straight face? Of course not, they look nigh on identical? That is what is important. Sure, the PS3 version might have a few extra numbers and letters on the end of it, but when faced with the sharpened scalpel of reality, it makes practically no difference.

Quote: 16x AA achieved without taxing the gpu, try again AD! It's not exactly 16x AA is it?
Being experimental, it does have its drawbacks. When edges in-game are one pixel or less than one pixel in thickness, the edge-detection technique doesn't really work. Pandemic also subjects the entire, completed framebuffer to analysis - including the HUD elements - so there is often artefacting on the text overlays.

It's not actually AA at all. All it does is find edges of the polygons and blurs them.

Nicely said Shorty, pity we didn’t see that sort of logic from you in Ads earlier post when he was trying to make the point that cross platform games are looking better on the 360. After all you had 129 posts in that thread to make the same point you’re making here. Of course you didn’t though because that thread was arguing in favour of the 360 & know where your allegiances lye don’t we.
Dogg: It's not exactly 16x AA is it?
Digital Foundry made comments that it looked better than 16x AA actually.
Gir: It's not actually AA at all. All it does is find edges of the polygons and blurs them.
Digital Foundry would argue that comment:
The screenshots may not be showing MLAA, and it's almost certainly not a technique as experimental as we thought it was, but it's certainly the case that this is the most impressive form of this type of anti-aliasing we've seen to date in a console game.
but it is still a great example of the SPUs being used to do post-processing work more traditionally associated with the GPU and, in this case, producing arguably better results than the more generally accepted MSAA solutions built into the graphics hardware.
I really wouldn’t have expected anything but negative comments on this forum & that seems to be what I’m getting. The pixel peepers over at Beyond3d are quite impressed with the technique & rightfully so:
Post 41 by Shifty:
You're missing the point. The case here isn't how good the AA looks compared to XB360, but how good it looks close up compared to any game. I've created a few comparison pics to illustrate taken from pictures 3/4 from here.
The quality of AA is exceptional. ………….

Looking at it in motion, I think it's a real leap. It is fair to say that the general make-up of the game means that the 0xAA on 360 isn't at all ugly, but side-by-side with the PS3 version, it's amazing just how smooth this technique looks. It's a blend, not a blur, and it's hugely impressive with just a few "odd" artifacts
Do you guys have anything positive to say????????
Will your comments change if we also see this technique adapted to run on the 360????

rrunner. I've never said that that either system is noticeably superior graphically. Now as for me personally (and any other non videophile out there), I don't care which one has all the fancy numbers on the end. They both look awesome and that is all that matters when it comes to the crunch.

Wouldn't you be able to see the difference even more, considering most people by now have a +45" tv?
Its important to note that this technique simulates 16XAA and is similar but not exactly the same. This well suited to consoles as all consoles games work on a smokin 'mirrors base, that is if it looks good its good enough.

Last time I looked they were selling like hotcakes
Surely in the near future when this technique or others similar become more widespread large screens will be more common. Whether you will all admit it or not we are all graphics whores to some extent.
If we're not then why rush out & buy the latest console or upgrade to the next OS & pc, heck my 5yr old pc still copes with word, outlook, access, excel & CorelDraw XIV.
Gears of War proved my point above as has MGS4, KZ2 & Uncharted2. We are all keen for the next innovative game & if it looks prettier than whats come before it thats even better. This technique is simply another step in that direction. The fact it occurred first on the ps3 from a 3rd party dev while the 360 gets none of it just makes me smile really really wide.

Had to smile because I've copped heaps off the other side for the first years of the ps3s release. Now its turned around & its all 1 way traffic & with 3rd party devs appearing to also be getting a handle on the CELL (16x AA) things can only get sweeter

Quote: The fact it occurred first on the ps3 from a 3rd party dev while the 360 gets none of it just makes me smile really really wide.
It occurred 2 years ago on a graphics card. It has never been done on a console before because before the PS3, there was no need to.

Quote: AD is chiming in with absolute BS. The 360 version also has its share of jaggies so don’t try & pretend otherwise Who said anything about jaggies? I am happy to admit that the X360 has jaggies in the saboteur - however (and my original point) was that the X360 version looks BETTER than the ps3 version - even with its jaggies. I would gladly take jaggies any day of the week than tearing and blurry textures. So like I said - X360 verison still comes out on top. Quote: The last game by Pandemic is now available commercially. But which version is the best graphics? Of course, the PC version. The Xbox 360 however, is a close second. Far behind on the other hand, is the Playstation 3. Here are blurred textures and less detail on the agenda. All versions have, however, a detailed representation of poor away together. This is shown by comparing images in our gallery.

As I said - might have been more fruitful if you chose a game to trumpet that actually looks better than on the platform you are trying to trash.

You have your head stuck so far up your own **** that I don't think you even know up from down and right from left anymore.
Seriously when I read your posts you give off this vibe that you are a mentally unstable person.
