With the launch of Xbox Live here in Australia, many BigPond Broadband users are asking if it will be unmetered traffic - that is, will using Xbox Live count towards their monthly download usage. Due to the way Microsoft have implemented the Xbox Live system and the nature of the games that can be played online, all Xbox Live gaming is considered metered traffic and it will therefore count towards your monthly usage limits.
All of GameArena's current games servers make use of a client/server system - that is, there is a central server which communicates data to a number of different gamers. The vast majority of the data travels exclusively between the game server and the user playing games, and because the game servers are managed directly by GameArena, BigPond is able to ensure that this traffic is unmetered.
With the Xbox Live system, any servers that are used by the system are outside of GameArena's control - there couold be any number of servers involved at any number of global loactions. As a result, it is logistically extremely difficult to ensure that all these addressed are correctly classified as unmetered traffic.
To further complicate the issue, many of the games on the Xbox Live platform use a different networking model, known as peer-to-peer. In this model, all data traffic travels directly between each user to each other user playing the same game. As a result, in each game, there is data traffic coming from and going to a wide number of different hosts, potentially from all over the world, making it extremely difficult to ensure that such traffic is unmetered. This also means that if you choose to host a game, not only will your usage count towards your monthly usage allowance, but so will the usage of all other players who choose to join the game you are hosting.

all good Term, just one thing, On the Whirlpool forums, Adam Williams asked about incorporating XBOX SYSTEM LINK GAMES into cogs!, now i can see how this is a problem, but for some games like Unreal Championship that have the option the run a DEDICATED SERVER...this should be aright? The only thing is, gamearena are ganna have fork out some cash and get some 24/7 xbox's running, somthing i cannot see happening.
Could you let me know how this XBOX COGS system was going to run? and hopefully somthing is still there for the future !

im really annoyed now, not only do we get charged for uploads...which is ridiculous, and have crappy usage to price ratios ($59 for 1 gig - optus $65 3 gig) but now it looks like we have no chance of unmetered XBOX live, which is the main reason i got cable in the first place! now im stuck on an 18 month crappy contract. ontop of that, if we host a game we will get charged for all upload usage aswell as heaps of lag cause we are capped at 128k

LOL.
Thats MS for you.
Rang up to ask them a question and they expected $50.
I hanged up in discuss because it Windows was the problem.
I fixed it by myself.
They are out for your money :s.

Not only do we have to put up with Paying 60 to 70 bucks a month to connect but we also have to re register our X-Box with Microsoft every year just to keep it connected.
And ADSL customer with a USB modem have got it worse because they have to buy a new modem and then run a cable through the roof from thier computer to their X-Box.
It would be cheaper for me to go out and buy 2 or 3 systems and link them.
This is just stupit. When will the world learn that Australia is as good if not better than the rest and should recive the same deals and products for the same price.

Things will get better, just not with Telstra.
I'll probably change to another ISP when my contract runs out.

i've read on teh official site that xbox was teaming up with aus to largest isps (telstra and optus) to make some special deals for xbox live, so maybe we will see some better prices in teh near future. only i won't be surprised if it's optus that takes teh innitiative.

Since i joined telstra on a simple 256 ADSL for $80 plan which was Unlimited i have been automatted shifted to a extra $10 512 plan i was pleased then for about a few months. Untill the 3 gig plan came out.
my simple unlimited $80 plan has mutated to now a 3gig for $90 a month.
*profanity towards telstra*
Its funny how the more customers they get the more i get screwed on my plan.
Telstra's number one excusse is that Australia is hard to set up broadband for. Well that thier fault not our's they should have for seen this.

i agree with the cable monopolisation.
they keep prices high because they can.
Over in the states, its unheard of for uncapped downloads on a cable modem to cost more than US$50.
DSL (in its different forms) is our only hope in australia for inexpensive broadband.

it's because australia isn't big enough to support enough competition like there is australia. i suggest we just move teh country into japan region so that we get cool gadgets sooner and increase the population size to support cheaper cable. i'd say move teh country over to the states, but then we'd just officially we called teh 51st state, like johnny howard has wet dreams about.

OMG!!! there are only 50 states!!! 50 stars on the flag = 50 states!!!! They do count Hawaii and Alaska in the 50.... lol...
BTW PS2 gaming is unmetered on SOCOM(voice traffic is charged) and Hardware Arena is also free. With hopefully more to come. Before all this online stuff came out telstra had an article about how they signed multi million dollar deals with Microsoft and Sony to enhance online gaming in Australia. No wonder we're ripped off in terms of usage if they sign shonky deals like that!

What's shonky about investing in online entertainment infrastructure? It would have been better for XBL if MS had deigned to do something similar.

Just get the unlimited ADSL plan from Planet Netcom. For $69 p/m u get the 256/64k or for $99 might as well go for the 512/128k. I dont think anyone would be prepaired to pay $229 p/m for the 1500/256k plan. With the unlimited plans, no need to worry bout uploads/downloads. Check em out at
http://www.planetnetcom.com.au/broadban ... dband2.php
Cheers...
PS now just about the number of states in da US..Just ask a Canadian... He'll tell ya exactly... 1 ...holding up his middle finger...lol

Why, this is the reason Telstra having problem with their e-mail lately not to mention MicroSoft problems with worms and related attacks
The more they profit on other misery the more they will pay just wait and see.

Whats this about USB modems not working with Live! ? I have a USB modem and when I bought Live! today the guy at Harvey Norman said it wouldn't work on my modem. But I also have an ethernet port on it aswell as a usb port. I have the Speedtouch 530 (The one that Telstra sent me) and I've been so worried about this at work that I went to the Speedtouch website and it says that it can have simultaneus USB and Ethernet connection...
http://www.speedtouchdsl.com/prod530.htm
I'm going to plug my Xbox up though the ethernet port on the Modem. This has nothign to do with my Computer or the USB so whats all this about its not going to work!? Please answer asap! I've already been screwed over with the meterage on Live! as I specifically asked the Telstra man that came around if Live would be unmered and he said YES. He knew I was talking about Live! he said that his children have Live! and its unmetred and so thats why I ended up going with telstra (among other things).
Don't tell me that after I have specifically told Telstra why I am buying broadband that they 1. Screw me over with my Metreage and 2. Screw me over with the modem.
If they have I'm cancelling straight away as I've only been only for less that a day.

Quote: but don't some other isps have free p2p? so they wouldn't be paying for it.... Most of the free p2p is only for intrastate. If you read what Term posted, the only way you'd benefit is if you were by chance playing with people only in your state, and they were hosting, which isn't really what xbox live is about.

I'm with Gryphon on this, they allow you plenty of game time, if you want more time, don't download crap, or pay for an extra gig of download per month. That's what i'm doing. I have just shutup and am paying for xbox live and I've havn't run over my monthly usage yet, I don't know what you are all complaining about. Although it would be cool to have xbox live for free.

If you guys don't wanna pay for crappy xbox live then why dont you just use one of them free networking thingy's. Here"s one that I found out and guess wat it"s FREE. no fees or anything. If u wanted to download the site is www.xbconnect.com
Now telstra has unlimited download so there shouldn't be many complaints. At just $69.95 for cable who's argueing.
